I’ve been looking into Teddy Roosevelt lately. He loses his wife and mother on the same day. That’s a trauma that could cause a man to end it all. What does he do? He leaves NYC and heads to the Badlands. THE BADLANDS. Reinvents himself. Finds his soul. An absolute heroes journey if ever there was one. Went from having nothing to live for to having everything to live for. There is something nourishing about these uniquely American lands that cannot be put into words. I remember feeling quite despondent myself once upon a time. Then I moved to the Mojave desert and it changed everything. I found there’s nothing deserted about the desert at all. What it lacks in physical life, it makes up for in the spiritual. The esoteric. I cannot explain what I’m trying to say about America. Don’t have the right words today. But I know this place can remake a man like no other on planet earth.

This is among the scripture I pull on frequently. I started leaning into it in the very tough days of USAF pilot training. And then, again and again, when flying into harm’s way, whether combat or special operations. I encourage you to lean on it when times are challenging: Philippians 4:6-7 “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Amen. When I said this throughout my campaign, CNN people called me cruel and unhinged. Now, after they helped secure the election for the 2 dorks responsible for all these problems, CNN is now echoing my campaign talking points as gospel. Fascinating!

At my age, birthdays are really special. At least that's what my bride tells me. I'll be 90 next year- God willing and the creeks don't rise. This year, we are going back to my hometown for a few days.

The really sucky part about social media is that some of us can't share the best parts of lives because crazy people don't like what we say. But what my wife did today is worth sharing.

I want to introduce you to Steve. He’s 83. His wife died a few months ago and he comes to this lodge in Spring Mill, Indiana and draws. He taught art in Terre Haute, IN his whole life. He also did courtroom sketches in court cases. In the comments I’ll share some pics from his sketchbook. He was excited when I said I was going to share his sketches with the world.

The key to saving the environment is not looking backward, it’s moving forward. I realized this the first time I visited Italy twenty years ago. Everything was clean and green. The rivers sparkled. The lesson for me was obvious: the answer is not underdevelopment. The answer is progress. When China was poor, the air was so polluted that people could barely see the blue sky. Today, blue skies have returned to their cities. Development does not only create wealth, it also provides the resources needed to restore and protect the environment. Some environmentalists want us to preserve every aspect of our biodiversity, including the mosquitoes for example, so that researchers can fly in once every ten years from their universities (which build particle accelerators and billion-dollar laboratories with their pocket money), study our ecosystems, and count how many people died from dengue outbreaks. They want to buy our air through carbon credits. If carbon credits were such a great deal, they would be selling them to us, not the other way around. Cleaning every river, lake, and water source in El Salvador, and ensuring they remain clean and sparkling, would cost roughly $12 billion. Where is that money supposed to come from without economic development? Carbon credits? The path forward for our country is the path of Japan and Singapore, not the path of the Congo.
