Most parents I meet in travel ball worry about the wrong things. I scout talent for an MLB org. I'm posting anonymously so I can be honest. 10 things scouts ACTUALLY look for in young ballplayers - none of them show up in the stat line. 🧵

@CoachDineen @NorCalU1 12u coach. Tourney a month ago - pool game. No new inning after 1.5hr. We are home team, have a 6-3 lead, bases loaded, our best hitter at the plate, 28 seconds to a W. 2-0 count and I give him the green light. He just misses and pops up, we end up losing 9-7. I’d do it again.

Got a Top Tier travel team trying to convince me that they want to forfeit mid game because they're worried about run differential. Said no, let the kids play and stop worrying about seeding. This is incredibly embarrassing and shows you exactly what's wrong with travel baseball.

@drewdavis71 Good for Ryan! Shake it off and get the next one, and be a good sport! This kid is on the right path. Keep up the great work with your son!

My son turned 10 today. Went 2-2 at the plate. Made some great plays in the field. He also allowed his first home run. 12yo all-star took him yard. Ryan went over and congratulated him and came back and threw a strike with the next pitch. That’s what I’ll remember.

@DavePrichard It is possible! You better learn to respect the game, and people, or you will be humbled. It’s not a matter of if, but when.

The most important thing you can say to your kid after an 0-for-4: Nothing. Car ride home. Music low. Wait for them to bring it up, and 9 times out of 10 they won't. They don't need to. They know they had a rough night. You don't need to remind them.

@Seth_3773 I don’t know what age this is - maybe 12u? - but that pitch is too close to take with 2Ks. I teach my kids to battle and get ugly with 2 strikes. If it’s close, foul it off and live to see another pitch. Also - that coach has no place in this great game.

What are we doing here? The coach coming in with the fake punch? The ump not flinching huge flex by him.

Ashbrook finishes it’s regular season 12-14 second best record in the last 20 years. I’m Extremely proud of these guys, the work they put in. After three consecutive 4 win seasons this is definitely a huge accomplishment and one to springboard this program in the future.

A veteran scout once told me: "I can read a kid's mental game in 4 plate appearances." He cared more about the RESPONSE after the strikeout or the error than what happened during his brief look at the player.

@CoachSwit It’s really pretty simple - scouts and college recruiters go where the good players are. We aren’t in to wasting time.

Lots of people on here love to say college coaches don’t come to high school games… Meanwhile, we had 4 D1 programs at ours Wednesday— UCONN, Central Connecticut State, Fairfield University & Quinnipiac University. They show up… just not everywhere.

A little bit of a tough view, but the bat speed is special! This is Petaluma’27 @dom_fontana_10. Very good infielder with very good size. He will absolutely help a program at the next level. @RealTimmyMac

@RobertStock6 As a scout, first impressions matter - a lot. This is a very interesting take that you have, and I don’t disagree with you at all. If Bazzanna had gone to the Cape instead of Driveline, and not figured out how to tap into that power, would he still have been 1-1? Probably not.

@CoachSwit 12u coach here - unfortunately, this is all too common now. We played a team in a DH a few years ago, and the opposing coaches were ripping shots in the dugout between games. Absolutely embarrassing and unfortunate for those kids.

Friend of mine coaching 12U tourney this weekend… Opposing parents pregaming in the lot, pouring drinks into cups, bringing it into the game. Drinking at 12U baseball now? Chirping umps & the opposing coach. Tournament did nothing. That’s where we’re at? See a problem?

People need to remember that Konnor Griffin... 1. Just turned 20 2. Was in highschool two years ago 3. Had just 26 MiLB games above Single-A. 4. The talent and makeup are off the charts. He's going to be just fine.

ATTN: All HS Baseball players Before you (or your parents or travel ball coach) tells everyone you’re only interested in D1… Go to a D2, D3, NAIA or JUCO game. (especially in the post-season). I promise your eyes will open and maybe some more doors.
