Rent near workplace, commute, formals, grooming, office socializing you never asked for. And the real cost isn't even money, it's time. It's difficult to gym consistently, can't spare time for a new hobby, can't take a weekday class. Your schedule belongs to someone else 5-6 days a week. The real joke is what you're actually doing for 10 hours a day. Sending follow-up emails about follow-up emails, building presentations no one reads past slide 3, sitting in meetings to plan more meetings, copy-pasting template responses. You traded your youth and your body for busywork that barely needs a human.
