Anecdata: these 5 bets are now weakening, pulling back from the ATH of last week. No surprise.
The Boston View@TheBostonView

I have 5 different bets at @kalshi that directionally play on the same thesis: rapidly draining political power of Trump, the GOP, and GOP's prospects in the mid-terms. Had these on for about 2 months now, and the "portfolio" is hitting new ATH tonight.

@BlacklionCTA But the larger point you make is even more true: the flows of important commodities through the Strait is really sobering. P.S. The US always has the option to run a subsidized domestic oil price like VZ did or Saudi does. That's one arg for domestic production surpluses.

@BlacklionCTA I mean, as you know, the U.S. is like a professor's dream case study in how you can transition from being a net importer of oil to a net exporter while gaining not a single protection from oil prices.

@orrdavid There is nothing about an increase in domestic production that reduces economic damage from higher oil prices, because we run a free market in oil and gasoline. U.S. is now a net exporter. Has zero effect on price. You are in good company with your misunderstanding here.

The Hormuz blockade strategy is from 40 years ago. It only made sense back when it actually hurt the USA. Now that we have cheap shale oil, the strategy is obsolete because Iran blockading the rest of the world's oil doesn't actually hurt the USA.

@CapitalObserver I'll answer that. Cramer didn't just save the market, because the Cramer Contrarian Trade (CCT) is a fun little plaything that works best in normal regimes, and especially wrt to individual stocks. The utility of the CCT breaks down during a big event, like a war.

The admin is incentivized to take a particular set of steps not to lose midterms. This isn’t rolling of the dice. The people in charge of the most powerful economy on earth don’t want to lose midterms and have a lot to lose if they do. Polling isnt predictive this early on and polymarket is wrong. Bribes and price controls are coming.

I'm with Jesse here. What's critical is that the U.S. halts the attack now, in order to catalyze the key, missing component: collective (world) action. The entire world needs the Strait open, and you have to give collective action room to breathe, to get there.
Jesse Livermore@Jesse_Livermore

My guess as to how this proceeds: Trump walks away, "Mission Accomplished", leaves Strait as a problem for ROW. Iran tolls it, arguing the toll funds are needed to rebuild the country. But they are generous w/ deals and avoid tolling it to a point that provokes crisis or outrage.

@Jesse_Livermore Pretty good call, Jesse. And your scenario also pushes to the side the hyperbolic forecasts that currently dominate.

@RepLuna The Senate is unable to pass the Save Act because the Save Act is much more than a Voter ID bill, and therefore can't get the votes. Has nothing to do with Thune, or Cornyn, or whatever explanation you are currently selling to your low IQ constituents.

So now we have a Senate that won’t pass Voter ID and they won’t fund ICE. What the hell did we elect these people to do IF NOT THESE THINGS?!

Your goal is to make your economy less sensitive to the price of oil. You can pursue one of two options: 1. A huge increase in domestic oil production that makes you a net exporter of oil. 2. A great reduction in domestic oil consumption as the energy mix diversifies.

@ChrisCillizza Hi Chris. In your podcast, could you address the typical pattern(s) of when voters largely make their minds up, in advance of election day? IIRC, it's usually by August but this year there are accelerators. x.com/TheBostonView/…
The Boston View@TheBostonView

When the public's disapproval of a war after just 4 weeks reaches the same levels of disgust that took several years to form during the Iraq war, then you need to stop thinking of the 2026 mid-terms as "voters will make their minds up in 6 months." No. The midterms are now.

@OneBadDude_ That's so funny that you think the mid-terms are "coming." They are here, in the room, right now and Americans are making their minds up right here, right now.

This should scare the hell out of everyone. The midterms are coming. Stop the bickering, stop the infighting, head down, eyes on the prize. If we f**k this up, we lose everything we’ve worked the last decade for. If we lose the midterms, we lose the country, perhaps forever.

A potential scenario: US Marines land on Kharg Island under fire, take cover behind Iran’s oil terminals. This forces Tehran into a brutal choice — destroy its own economy or let the US control 90% of its oil exports, — Financial Times. 1/
