@BlakPil77087 @AbeLopezAuthor I think it's fair to say that if the scope of this thought experiment included my small town I would press blue without hesitation and if it included the entire world it's much more likely I would press red.

@TheUnrustleable @AbeLopezAuthor I believe what you are saying is basically what I said in another thread: It’s totally outcome based. If you knew with 100% certainty that red would win, you’d vote red even if you were hardcore about pushing blue. You’d really want to figure out the odds first.

Rational people know intrinsically that everyone should press red, it eliminates any question of anyone dying Irrational (emotionally-driven) people will be compelled to press blue because “it’s the right thing to do” And the more you try to convince them otherwise the more they’ll dig in
Tim Urban@waitbutwhy

Everyone in the world has to take a private vote by pressing a red or blue button. If more than 50% of people press the blue button, everyone survives. If less than 50% of people press the blue button, only people who pressed the red button survive. Which button would you press?

@mhartl THESIS: I'm very smart. ANTITHESIS: You think you're smart, but aren't. SYNTHESIS: I'm smarter, so I'm right. Checkmate smooth brain! Just hilarious.

@mhartl Setting aside game theory. Theory of mind. Ethics. High trust vs. low trust societies. Long term consequences of outcome. I'm incredibly amused by how red buttoners tend to use academic sounding language they never otherwise use. It's so performative.

You are standing at the edge of a cliff. There is a red brick path leading away from the cliff. You can take that path and go about your day. Or, you can jump off the cliff. If you jump off the cliff you die, but if 4+ billion other strangers also jump off, then you live.

@TheNerdWASuit I think a lot of the characters are annoying, and there's what seems to be a lot of undeserved power boosts for the cool factor, but I really love it. Generally, I don't think the writing was as strong.

@timsoret There's a reason Ayn Rands "Objectivism" and Rational Self Interest only go so far. This thought experiment is an incredible illustration of that.

Assuming no possible coordination: If everybody was rational, we would all individually pick red & be safe without needing coordination, trusting that the sum of individual interests would lead to the most optimized outcome. Except that many humans are irrational & dogmatic, and driven by idealistic / empathetic concerns, would pick blue, even if that requires coordination which is not guaranteed & which puts them as risk. Knowing this, even if you’re initially inclined to vote red, the actual moral choice, to avoid the death of those willingly putting their lives at risk, is to vote blue to maximize the chances of saving everybody. In short, if you know that others are not perfectly rational agents, to save them you have to go along with their irrationality, which is counter intuitive.

Red is not a real button. The dilemma is phrased like it kills blues, but it doesn't. It does absolutely nothing. The blue button kills blues. Red button is a scapegoat so blues can blame reds if they fail to reach the objective they imposed on themselves. And they try to guilt trip others into doing the same mistake. Remove red, the blue dilemma still exists. Blues need 50% of people to press their button or they die. Imagine you're in a room with only the blue button, do you press it? Since you don't know if people will pick blue or not (50/50) it's akin to picking up a revolver with the chamber half filled and playing russian roulette. Just because you daydreamed a scenario in your head where you're a hero saving toddlers and colorblind people and whatever else I've seen blues invent to justify their action. When you're actually just gambling your life by ego thinking you're oh so morally superior. Don't press blue.

@SonnyBunch If everyone presses the blue the survival rate is 100% too. There is no argument for red that doesn't equally apply to blue, that isn't. "I'm willing to kill other people arbitrarily so that I can live."

@Melty_Leviathan Cope and seeth. There is no argument for pressing red that isn't equally applicable to blue, except a willingness to arbitrarily kill others for your own self-preservation. Human beings are not rational agents. If you really "logically" understand game theory you know that.

Best IQ test this site has seen in a while. Most read it as blue being the only way to guarantee everyone's survival, but the simpler solution is for everyone to press red. Although one may press red for selfish reasons, it's also the only true guarantee of survival for anyone.

@anime_daily There's a reason the fire nation had such incredible victories. Even great defeats didn't even touch the mainland, or slow down the war machine. They literally needed royal succession to change things.

@AJA_Cortes I take your point about mysticism but, counterpoint. If a professional MMA practitioner fought a regular guy, what they could do would look like death touch, multiple blocks, multiple kicks, and secret ninja moves.

The rise of MMA effectively ended the mysticism around "martial arts" things like "death touch" dont exist blocking multiple strikes is for movies, not real life No one says "hiyah!" in real life multiple kicks makes you easy to take down there are no secret ninja moves
