My advice if you're learning Excel: Learn VLOOKUP first because you'll still find it in older workbooks. Then switch to XLOOKUP for most new work. If you found this useful, bookmark for later😉

VLOOKUP and XLOOKUP aren't as complicated as they seem. Imagine one table has Customer IDs, while another has customer names. There are thousands of rows, and they're not in the same order, so copy-pasting isn't an option. That's where VLOOKUP and XLOOKUP come in. A thread🧵👇

Why many analysts prefer XLOOKUP: ✅ Looks left or right ✅ Doesn't break when columns are inserted ✅ Built-in "Not Found" message ✅ Cleaner syntax

That's where XLOOKUP comes in. Formula: =XLOOKUP(A2,F:F,G:G,"Not Found") Instead of counting columns, you simply tell Excel: • Lookup range • Return range

The limitation? VLOOKUP can only search left → right. If the value you want is to the left of your lookup column, VLOOKUP won't work. An option maybe changing column to the right of the lookup column

Formula: =VLOOKUP(A2,F:G,2,FALSE) Breakdown: • A2 → value to find • F:G → where to search • 2 → return the 2nd column • FALSE → exact match

Let's start with VLOOKUP. It looks for a value in the first column of a table and returns information from another column. Example: You have Customer IDs. You want Customer Names. VLOOKUP finds the matching ID and returns the name.
