Think of it this way: Extend Chief Justice Roberts’ analogy of judging to umpiring as he explained it at his confirmation hearing. In that frame, what happened here is pitcher Jack Smith got the Judge/umpire to come over to the mound. Smith said, “I’m going to throw a fastball right down the middle for my next pitch, what do you think?” and the Judge/umpire said “That sounds great. I love it!” That’s the kind of non-neutral, collusive umpiring/judging no one should want to see happen in America. Yet it’s what President Trump and his allies faced in DC.

Manafort, who served as campaign manager for 2 months was fired when the Times published his name in a dossier. Regardless this has nothing to do with the conspiracy theory that trump’s campaign colluded with Russia to hack Hillary’s emails. The fbi knew by the end of January 2017 that there was no evidence for that. The line agents had investigated Flynn, page, poppadopolous etc… and they knew there was no underlying crime. Manafort was convicted of tax crimes. He was not even charged under the espionage act.
