@EZE3D What companies are doing is quite extreme and it will heavily impact people’s lives, so they don’t want to run the risk of someone reacting badly. Not defending the layoffs or the companies, but there is a reason they handle it this way.

When layoffs happen in games people are treated like criminals. All access gets cut immediately, they're escorted out by security, need to book to get their stuff back, no time to say bye, severance & future employability is held over their head as a threat should they speak out.

@Variamech Hell yeah!! I don’t know if there’ll be a “building”, and I’m not sure about ‘full’ either 😅 But it would really be something!

@VertexMode 100% would take that Job offer. Living in a cheap city, short comute to a building full of talented people and access to nature is a great deal.

@WillFaucherVFX @MR3Dev One would think that, but as he mentioned, it comes with many risks. If you’re young, have no dependents, and are desperate for a job with lower pay regardless of location, then it’s possible. But that’s already a much smaller pool of people to hire from.

Yeah thats a great point but the issue is, good luck getting talent to move to Nowhere Arizona. It comes with higher risk. Banking on the job working out. If it doesn, you have to uproot all over again. Whereas in, say, Montreal (not the US but hear me out)if you get laid off you can cross the street and get a new job at another shop. Makes it easier to hire, but also easier to land on your feet again. If you have to move across states again and again, that is crippling and not everyone can afford to. Its hard enough hiring top talent as is, even more so getting them to uproot their whole life to work for you in a small town.

The headline always is "Game development in the US is very expensive therefore 300M budget". What they don't say is not the US, its a few cities where game dev in concentrated. I know city life is cool, but a big reason for high budgets is because studios willingly chose the most expensive cities in the US. Just as an example to have the same level of life I have in rural Texas I would need 3X my salary if I moved to Cali or NY or Seattle.

@TheCartelDel This is actually good advice. Better start doing what was trending 25 years ago. Hopefully when I finish it, a few dozen people will buy it out of nostalgia. That’s my plan anyway. 💪

If you’re starting development of new game, do the opposite of whatever successful trend just popped up. By the time you ship in 4-5 years, players will be SICK of it.

@JonahKettman Interesting. In Japan you submit two documents when applying for jobs: a resume (履歴書) that’s usually 1–2 pages with basic info and education/work history, and a 職務経歴書, which is a detailed employment history. I’ve even seen some go up to 4–5 pages.

Crazy to think that some people laid off yesterday haven't had to worry about updating a resume for over a decade. How do you summarize that much time into a few bullet points under "Skills"

@Flipside_Art @VValtzy_ The easiest thing to say when you don’t have that kind of money. Also, he doesn’t have 5 billion, that’s he’s net worth.

@VValtzy_ At that point, what's the need for having THAT MUCH money? If I had 5 billion, I'd splurge most if it on making peak fiction and donating. Idc about mansions, yachts, cars, or any of that bs.

What’s with the HR wording everywhere? “I was impacted by today’s layoffs.” Why not just say: “I was laid off”?

I was impacted by today’s layoffs at Epic. Truly came out of nowhere for me. Right before my birthday, too. I really liked Epic. Really liked the teams. Really liked what we were doing in music. So it’s all a shock. Time to breathe for a minute. Then onward and upward.

@SHADERSOP Understanding numbers that are closer to reality helps us prepare better for situations like this. Reacting to posts like this out of rage only keeps people ignorant about finances, and ignorance is the worst place to be.

Come on. I get that people are angry, but this isn’t even close to how real companies work. Anyone who has run even a small business knows the biggest cost is always payroll. And in big companies, executive salaries usually account for maybe 2–4% of the budget

@retirejapan_OG Didn’t expect this take from you. Increasing business costs artificially across the country isn’t going to make prices go down for consumers.
