Dad buys stock at $250K. It grows to $12M. If he sells, he owes tax on an $11.75M gain. Instead, he puts it in a trust. Borrows against it. Borrowing is not income. So no tax. He lives on loans. Never sells. He dies holding the asset. Kids inherit at a $12M basis. IRS gets $0.

In relationships, skills, dreams, healing, money, content, health... You do not have to be good to begin. But you must begin to be good.

@tferriss Yes, but often the same things are the answers to both questions 🙃 and that's the real hard part of life. There is rarely a huge driver of happiness without requiring an acceptance of corresponding pain.

The key to having more time is doing less, and there are two paths to getting there, both of which should be used together: (1) Define a to-do list and (2) define a not-to-do list. In general terms, there are but two questions: What 20% of sources are causing 80% of my problems and unhappiness? What 20% of sources are resulting in 80% of my desired outcome and happiness? The goal is to find your inefficiencies in order to eliminate them and to find your strengths so you can multiply them.

@bryan_johnson It's your brain itching. You can't be present because something itches. You don't know how to scratch it but worry, fear, fixation, dopamine - those feel close to comfort. But you only keep spiraling.

Meditation phases 1 - Cool, this helps me focus better! 2 - I don't really get as mad at things, that's interesting 3 - Hard things don't feel as overwhelming 4 - I can enjoy all the moments, I'm here. Life is short - find ways to be there for it.

Listen to that call for change in your gut. The one that rejects today's inertia like you ate an old piece of cheese.

3/3 Don't hold your dreams so tightly. Gentleness enables clarity. Clarity enables good action. Good action enables your future.

2/3 And worse - a waste of mind. Do the hard thing. Be grateful even though you're not there yet. Be present even though there are parts of the present you're pushing away from. Be kind to yourself even when you resent your past decisions.

1/3 Feelings are hard when you're a bit lost. Anger, fear, worry, comparison feel productive. At least you're rejecting your circumstances? But you know what you want. You don't need to wade into the mess to reinforce it. You're taking action. The rest is just distraction.

The gap between what you do and what you think, is unhappiness. Be present for the process. Be present for the pain. That's the only way you'll eventually be present for the prize.

Podcasting with a buddy (like I get to do with @thesamparr) is the stone cold nuts of content No algorithm stress, no editing, no constant whipping out phone to capture every moment. Just hanging out 1-2 hours a week, and nerding out about your favorite stuff If there was no money and no fame, I’d still enjoy doing it I wonder if that’s true for other media (YouTube, TikTok)..?

Reminder: underneath the noise, you know exactly what need to do. Progress is hard, slow, and beautiful. Distraction is fast, feels good, and leaves you empty. Choose.

No one is posting their performance on FinTwit anymore as the stock market hammers portfolios. I haven't posted my performance in years, but here is the latest update (please note my personal performance is AFTER taxes and costs, while the S&P is BEFORE it).

3-6 months of beginner hell (making close to zero progress and questioning whether it's worth it) is a natures way of filtering out people who weren't serious in the first place.
