In a highly unusual moment at the Supreme Court, Justice Alito gave an impromptu response to Justice Sotomayor from the bench after she read her dissent from his majority opinion in Mullin v. Al Otro Lado.

@ardematic Thanks for coming out, however the Adirondack chair features a flat, straight-slat backrest and a standard slanted seat, while the Muskoka chairfeatures a curved, fan-shaped backrest…which this chair has, so it is indeed a Muskoka Chair..perhaps this other angle shows it better.

I’ve been challenged by my fair share of difficult paintings, but holy mackerel painting a Muskoka chair is next level… Ridiculous amount of nooks and crannies…. Decided on the iconic red…

@ardematic @boriquagato Also slightly likelier to be rabid leftists and communists (not much, but slightly). On personal level they all might be fun to be around at sporting events, but don't forget "they not like us".

We just saw our first Amish people!!!! They were coming toward us in a horse-drawn buggy. Such a cool moment. I don’t want to record them without their permission, so you’ll have to trust me on this one.

After Katrina like I always say it became a real actual force in American culture again for about a decade because it was just cheap af and it was cool. This never attracted much investment because the arrangement was unstable and all the smart money knew we would just blow it then Mitch Landrieu tried to use the place as a staging ground for a hilariously bad presidential run & that tipped the balance into red again. Then covid just totally obliterated what was left. Probably no American city more brutalized by covid than Nola. Whole place runs on live music and eating out.

Uhh..really the Marcellos were running New Orleans as the Southern outpost of CIA activity in the 50s and 60s. At that point it peaked in population, white/black ratio, crime hit it's low point...it even started to like normalize itself into an American city. Then Garrison and the Kennedys went after the mob and two hurricanes obliterated the place and it collapsed back to tribal shamanism and has been in some form of low energy entropic burnout since then.
Read The Signs@Semiogogue

I would be very interested to see you set forth a discussion of when New Orleans went off the rails, how it did so, and what forces conspired to ensure it basically became a shithole. My own suspicion is that it comes down to a reaction to Huey P. Long. A late friend of mine (who was born in New Orleans, as it happens) once told me that one can't properly understand what was done to New Orleans and more broadly to Louisiana and the Gulf Coast without digging into all that...

Driving through Ohio. Towns like this are why we’re trying to avoid the interstates and take the slower roads instead. These are the kinds of places we want to see. This feels like peak America.🇺🇸

@katesbooksnooks Where in Ohio/Pennslyvania would you recommend visiting an Amish community? Also, is there anything we should keep in mind when visiting? We’d like to be respectful and not disturb anyone.

Today my eyelids will be poked 160 times with a 4mm probe. It clears my meibomian glands, which oil the tear film. Mine got jammed up, which causes dry eyes and over time the glands waste away if not cared for. Longer write up on this soon.
