It's hard to countenance, when you're totally enveloped in the swamplands and the freshwater marshes, the brackish esuaries that fade into the Gulf, that you are looking at a doomed system. But its done. The book is written. What is right now absolutely teeming with life and green and vitality will, by the end of the century, be gone. There's nothing you can do.

When I give writing advice out I always feel like I'm pushing spaghetti into a garbage disposal because I don't really know what symbolism is. I did at one time but to be able to write actual poetry instead of criticism I had to forget all of that.

That "doomed" aspect extends to the city itself. No other American city operates under such a certain warrant of death. It's going to be gone. Soon. Everyone knows it, so the type of person who is here...it's a type of person with a certain type of concern, who doesn't have another kind of concern.

My third collection of poems, Tacoma, will be a series of sonnets written by a divorced 45 year old man who steals his ex wife's dog and takes his 2011 single cab Tacoma on a road trip from Takoma Park to Tacoma Washington. It will drive my follower count to zero.
