There's been a lot of talk about "getting one-shotted" over the past few years, but this concern fundamentally misunderstands the nature of the threat in the current environment. Your mind has an obscene number of attack surfaces and the information ecosystem you inhabit has been designed to take advantage of each an all of these. Anyone who knows anything about propaganda or advertising knows that these battles aren't won with individual pieces of information, but rather with a large volume over time. People often mistake the straw that broke the camel's back as some sort of magic information bullet that nets a cougar magnum style kill when placed correctly. People then strive to seek revelation and avoid info hazards as if certain pieces of information hold special power, intrinsically. This is like worrying about which drop of water will break the damn. The worry is ill-posed, and worries like it are, at least in part, why people seek wisdom in pithy quotes and doses of ayahuasca. I suppose then that it's no surprise that "getting one-shotted" became such a successful meme. It shifts attention directly away form the actual memetic threat which is more of a death from a thousand Shannon cuts than a single deadly shot.

Silly Business Theory is right: in the future the best work, greatest progress, most valuable innovations won't come from laboring under the false consciousness that work must be hard and serious to produce value. The best work is going to come from people playing and having fun.

The more I look at this the more impressed I am and the more I realize how grateful we should be to Tao. 1. He acknowledges ignorance: this is something academics almost never do since their cultural capital is tied up in them knowing things. But he can since, well, he's Terence Tao. 2. He is explicitly acknowledging his use of GenAI to fight the stigma of using AI. If the child prodigy turned UCLA prof who studied with Erdos uses AI, it is legitimate technology. (please start using this sentence with AI skeptics btw) 3. He is also showing how AI is best used: as a kind of syntactic tool that finds connections in possibility space and has access to a larger library of information than our brains can. There's more here but the cool internet thing is a list of three. I often lament Tao has too playful of a mode of operating, feeling like he plays with linear algebra when he should be doing foundations of mathematics. But not only does this moment prove my view wrong, it also proves just how much Silly Business Theory #SBT is right: in the future the best work, the greatest progress, and the most valuable innovations won't come from people laboring under the false consciousness of Protestantism and Marxism that asserts work must be hard and serious to produce value. The best work is going to come from people playing and having fun. We're on the cusp of a near utopian explosion in human potential and quality of life. And you're bearish?!?!?!?!??????!?

My wife’s aunt was a storyteller so we have several cassette tapes of stories from my wife’s childhood. My daughter listens to them on a cassette player. I was getting a little tired of frozen and K-pop demon hunters so I got her a new tape. Now she runs around the house going ah-ah-aaaaaahh-ahh.

I can't speak for the creator, but minimally Refine's stated purpose is different. AI tools may be useful for catching bugs, but it doesn't mean that it would be good for the independent production of new research. Refine is deliberately marketed differently, and I think for good reason. When I put one of my papers through it, it caught a typo in one of my proofs. Useful, but I did not produce any novel research itself, but that's okay since that's not the purpose of the tool.

@ben_golub @bas_logic @littmath @Tomodovodoo @RefineDotInk What makes refine different? That it only needs to verify each step in its narrow context? Would it have worked if they had sent their proof to refine for verification? Trying to understand if this is a battle against different sets of agents or if there's sthg more fundamental

If you're interested in math and AI, you may have come across this extraordinary slop explosion @littmath and @Tomodovodoo have identified serious errors @RefineDotInk just found a middle school error in Prop 12.43 - subtracting inequalities doesn't work like that!

My multi-agent harness powered by GPT-5.4 settled a FrontierMath Open Problem. The result of 2 weeks of 5-10 agents working 24/7: there are no char 3 rank 1 del Pezzo surfaces with more than 7 singularities. This settles the problem to the negative. Details below.

Ah, but a man’s reach should exceed his grasp, or what’s a heaven for?

@bas_logic I applaud Red Lobster for trying once again to grasp the infinite even despite what it cost them the last time.

@Vedankt @MegaBasedChad I believe the gum is actually less bad on your gums. I don’t know exactly what’s in the pouches but when they dry out there is this cement like residue that ain’t good.
