India's Advanced Early Warning Missile Detection and Tracking Radars and ships involved in the Missile Defense Program. 1 > The first step in building a credible Ballistic Missile Early Warning System (BMEWS) was the acquisition and deployment of two Israeli ELM-2080 Green Pine missile warning radars. These were installed near the city of Kolar, Karnataka, and are protected by radio-transparent domes. 2 > In 2009, the Indian electronics company Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), with participation from Astra Microwave and Cape Electronics, developed the Swordfish (LRTR-I) radar to support the national missile defense program. This radar features an active phased array antenna and is capable of tracking up to 200 targets at ranges of up to 1,500 km. 3 > In 2011, the Super Swordfish (LRTR-II) L-band AESA anti-ballistic missile radar became operational. It can track objects in low Earth orbit as small as 0.25 square meters at a range of 1,000 km, and as small as 0.09 square meters at a range of 800 km. 4 > These advanced Indian early warning radars are designed to protect the capital region from medium-range ballistic missile threats. The LRTR-I and LRTR-II radars are located on a mountain ridge approximately 12 km west of Udaipur in Rajasthan. The active antenna arrays of both the Swordfish and Super Swordfish radars differ in geometric dimensions and are housed within radio-transparent domes. 5 > The Prithvi Air Defence (PAD) interceptor, based on the Prithvi ballistic missile, PAD is a two-stage system with a maximum intercept altitude of 80 km. The first stage uses solid fuel, while the second stage is powered by liquid fuel. During the mid-course phase, the missile is guided by radio commands, and in the terminal phase, its active radar seeker is activated. 6 > Prithvi interceptor missile test launches were conducted from a missile range located on Abdul Kalam Island. These tests successfully intercepted multiple targets simulating the Chinese-made DF-11 tactical ballistic missile. 7 > As part of the second phase of the missile defense program, it was decided to develop the AD-1 short-range interceptor missile, with an interception range of 1,000 km, and the AD-2 long-range interceptor missile, with an interception range of 3,000 km. The first test of the two-stage AD-1 interceptor missile was conducted on November 2, 2022, at the Chandipur missile range in Odisha, located along the Bay of Bengal. 8 > The Indian Navy employs several vessels to test missile defense systems. The primary floating launch platform for testing interceptors is INS Anvesh (A41). Built by Cochin Shipyard Limited in Kochi, Kerala, the vessel was commissioned in 2022. The first interceptor missile was launched from a sea-based platform on April 21, 2023. 9 > INS Anvesh is 118.4 meters long, 20 meters wide, and has a draft of 7.1 meters, with a displacement of approximately 10,000 tons. It has a top speed of 18.5 knots and an endurance of 45 days, with a crew of 65 personnel. The vessel is expected to be equipped with a new S-band AESA SBR radar, which is also planned for installation on future destroyers and frigates designed for missile defense missions. 10 > In 2021, the Indian Navy commissioned the research vessel INS Dhruv (A40), also built in Kochi. This vessel serves as a floating early warning platform for missile threats and can also be used for testing purposes. 11 > INS Dhruv is a large ship displacing 15,000 T , The ship is equipped with powerful X-band and S-band radars featuring active electronically scanned arrays (AESA), designed to detect and track high-speed ballistic targets and guide interceptor missiles. It also carries advanced optoelectronic systems, modern communication equipment, and telemetry reception and transmission capabilities. 12 > Despite India’s extensive land-based testing infrastructure, sea-based interceptor tests and floating Early warning radars suggest a move toward naval missile defense systems, similar to the United States, enabling wider coverage and more flexible responses to threats from Pakistan and China.
