@holo_cene @nonzerosumgain Which means "every ten years" is *not* frequent enough to offer much protection against whooping cough over time, and whooping cough is now circulating again (on and off depending on region). So on balance you're probably better off for the pharmacist's mistake anyway.

@holo_cene @nonzerosumgain Also the tetanus part of that vaccine is the only one we have worked about in recent public health history because it's the only disease present in the environment and the other two are, afaik, contagious illnesses. But the whooping cough portion of the vaccine wanes super fast!

@Redkiraz @elisaperego78 A facility or military base has political implications (one country may not want their citizens held by another) and is also a huge risk for the country that agrees to take them on. It would be fantastic if the WHO actually had quarantine facilities in a handful of countries...

@Redkiraz @elisaperego78 I've read cruise ships use a lot of shared air. I assume filtration between rooms with shared ventilation is minimal. If we accept *any* possibility of airborne spread, the risk of infection to currently uninfected crew and passengers will only increase with time on the ship.

Why didn't they organize a mandatory quarantine for 147 people in a facility/in the ship/in a military hospital during 6 weeks? Why? Answers, anyone?

@MrsP2019 @suchnerve It's a concern still because the cord on the floor, even where it's not likely to get wet, does get jostled by feet, and the plug does get tugged loose from the wall over time. But I'm not sure what else to do 🤷 it's definitely safer than having the cord travel next to the sink.

@MrsP2019 @suchnerve We have a Levoit in our main bathroom because we live on the top floor of an apartment and are concerned about shared plumbing. The only outlet is directly above the sink (yikes!) but there's an outlet right outside the door that we plug it into. The cord fits under the door.

Air purifier obsession is mainly due to compelling data that enough air purifiers + social distancing = Covid risk near 0%, even without 😷s

@ghhughes @covidbagofdicks ... their pet project is useful/helps the company in any way, or is edging out other necessary features in terms of development time. The names are things like "Greenhouse" for tools that are a shiny wrapper for existing reporting, because it "houses" things. It's all branding.

@ghhughes @covidbagofdicks So I suspect you're right -- having to think about legitimacy is inherently off-putting to many people. I do think marketing terminology can overcome some of this. My coworker names all their tiny software features and everyone loves it so much they have stopped asking why ...

We REALLY need a campaign to rename FFP3/N95 to a human friendly term. The fact that the word “mask” can mean literally the most ineffective thing OR the thing that is ‘nearly perfect’ is causing huge problems in public health. Most in the article are wearing N95s not masks.
tern@1goodtern

Astronauts, A-list Movie Stars, Gold Medal Olympians, they're masking... ... but masking in hospitals? "Masking in hospitals, however, can result in a psych referral." Excellent article from Tess Finch Lees... Please read and share widely! independent.ie/opinion/commen…

@carolj6 @AnneMarieLarson @1goodtern My understanding is the best time to test is 3-4 months after a suspected infectio? Which would be every 3-4 months as surveillance to detect previous asymptomatic infections... Which is not tenable long-term.

@carolj6 @AnneMarieLarson @1goodtern still can't rule out previous infection because not everyone generates detectable antibodies; we generally generate fewer nucleocapsid antibodies than spike antibodies (partly because of vaccination? Maybe just because?), and the antibodies don't typically last that long.

It's been growing and growing but I think the "there's no way you can have avoided covid infection" crowd is finally finding its voice and its moment. May I just say to all of you who believe that... **you are wrong**

Experts say they have lost faith in the government’s ability to contain the H5N1 bird flu outbreak - CNN “I don’t know if the bird flu will become a pandemic, but if it does, we are screwed,” said Angela Rasmussen, a virologist at the University of Saskatchewan in Canada.

Nov 15th update: A REALLY good sign for winter, with infections dropping again this week. 3x⬇️ of 12 month avg, and 3x⬇️ of early Nov avg (2020-2023). Looking less likely to reach 1M infections/day in Dec. 🔸185,000 new infections/day 🔸1 in every 180 people currently infected

@loveindiaandus @PragueorBrno @HmpxvT Well-fitting respirators, absolutely. Cloth or surgical masks, no. Surgical masks may cut down on transmission some but don't provide any significant protection to the person wearing them.

I feel like I am a character in a dystopian movie. We have a big chance of facing soon a pandemic with a virus that scientists know is highly neuroinvasive. H5Nx viruses like #H5N1 were already found in all the regions in the brain below. Where are the vaccines, bloody hell?!?!
