Superb work from @pewresearch on national pride — and beautifully presented. When we ask what makes people proud of their country, the answers reveal something powerful: emotional bonds that run deeper than the divides we so often focus on. So much to build on here.

🌎 What makes you feel proud of your country? 🗣️ Though responses vary across 25 nations, at least some people in each country say they are proud of their politics and economics. 🧵⬇️

The report has some great immigration questions I haven't seen before, showing more room for agreement than usually assumed. 90% of Trump voters agree that "properly controlled immigration can be good for America" and 70% that it should be easier for people to immigrate legally (but harder to come illegally).

JUST RELEASED: #BeyondMAGA, our new study of 12,000+ Trump voters, reveals Trump built a coalition, not a cult. Only 38% of his 77 million voters say being 'MAGA' is important to them. We identified 4 distinct types of Trump voters—each with different motivations and worldviews. Meet the MAGA Hardliners, Anti-Woke Conservatives, Mainline Republicans, and Reluctant Right: BeyondMAGA.us

Significant that today's @nytimes poll finds for the first time, Americans' top concern is "our politics" (polarization, violence, threats to democracy) above economic issues. @Nate_Cohn's breakdown highlights a mood that is bleak but not catastrophic: nytimes.com/2025/09/30/pod…

Grateful for @SpencerJCox's recognition of @MoreInCommon_US on the @ezraklein podcast this week. He's thought deeply about evidence-based solutions to the spiral of polarization and violence. An essential voice right now.

Fantastic to be launching @Moreincommon_’s new map of today’s Britain - compared to five years ago in the Brexit era, less frustrated with each other and far more frustrated with our systems:
Luke Tryl@LukeTryl

In 2020 @Moreincommon_ launched the British 7 Segments. After a pandemic, major global conflicts, political upheaval, cost of living crisis, changes in work/social/information habits it’s time to update them for 2025. Here’s an intro to our new tribes of Britain (Quiz link next)

Lots of positive feedback for the surprising findings in our latest US report, showing that both Republicans and Democrats vastly underestimate the extent of environmental concerns in their own tribe moreincommonus.com/publication/am…

Brilliant piece from @LukeTryl and something @Moreincommon_ is seeing across our countries - something people are talking about with a lot of passion.
Luke Tryl@LukeTryl

I’ve written for @SpecCoffeeHouse about people’s stories in focus groups of how they’ve turn inward and become less social since the pandemic and the risk it leaves us lonelier, more isolated less cohesive and less open to new experiences. (Link next)

I don’t think I’ve called anything a ‘must-read’ thread before, but first time for everything. This captures the mood very eloquently. Also worth noting that while the post-election let down is new the underlying sense of disappointment with every institution of society is not.
Luke Tryl@LukeTryl

We spent the start of this week in Merthyr Tydfil & Dudley two top Reform targets talking to voters in a series of focus groups to try find out how real Farage’s party’s momentum is. I’ve written about the deep disillusionment we found in today’s @guardian (link in next post).

Major new study of what Gen Z in Britain think about social media. So sad, the regrets about getting it young. Most think it harms them and their generation; say life would be better with an age limit of 16. From @Moreincommon_
Luke Tryl@LukeTryl

🆕 🧵@Moreincommon_ @WeAreNewBritain research for @NEUnion finds Gen Z Britons aged 16-24 think social media has become more addictive, more negative and less safe for young people in last 5 years and by 3-1 they think social media does more harm than good for under 16s.

A special @Moreincommon_ moment after our study of UK public attitudes to smartphones: the teachers’ union and the Conservatives forming a unity ticket. Great examples of an issue where public support transcends political differences.
Daniel Kebede@DanielKebedeNEU

Pleased to be alongside @KemiBadenoch and @LauraTrottMP on this. Daniel Kebede, the general secretary of the National Education Union, called for “deep-seated reform of the way social media is regulated” telegraph.co.uk/news/2025/01/2…

Thinking of Syrian friends who have lost so much, but have not lost hope. "It is time for Syrians to lead a peaceful Syria. Free and democratic ... Almost every Syrian carries pain and trauma into this new moment. It is a moment that holds such promise." diary.thesyriacampaign.org/syria-is-free-…
