Sigh, I still have a lot of Budget docs to read and cannot spend my whole evening doing this but go on I'll do one more... £1m relief is on top of £1m couple allowance, so really £2m+ farms only. Only around 200 estates per year affected (av estate value £6m), just isn't armageddon for small family farms.
Kirstie Allsopp@KirstieMAllsopp

@CarolineCoramUK Imposing inheritance tax of 20% on farms worth over a million. Which is the case for many farms these days, this is money those families never want to realise.

@redballoonsue @riversorare @MartinSLewis “Cash is king” in business means cash flow is vital. It enables flexibility, covers expenses, and fuels growth. While assets are valuable, liquidity is crucial for stability, especially in uncertain times. Not sure if these “don’t pay by cards” people realise the true meaning!

@riversorare @MartinSLewis That's not helpful. Cash is no longer king and as a result many bank branches have closed. Businesses have nowhere to bank the cash you insist on using. I've talked to small sellers in a local craft centre saying they have to drive 25 miles now to be able to bank cash takings.

Some asking me "isn't it illegal for places not to accept cash?". No it isn't. This is a common confusion because of a mis-undertanding over what 'legal tender' means. Legal tender simply means what can't be refused as payment in a court ordered debt. It doesn't impact day-to-day life. There are no rules on what payments type firms have to accept as long as they are not discriminating.

I was at a theme park the other day and ran into overpriced card only options. At one I m ordered and then walked away when they said they wouldn’t take my cash. It occurred to me that if we create enough cost friction in this way we may be able to rescue cash and stave off the surveillance and loss of freedom that entails for a little longer yet.

"That's public money, that’s your money, that's tax payers money." The Duchies have made "a heck of a lot of money in profits" a long side an increase in The Sovereign Grant, says Labour peer Margaret Hodge.

@CharlotteCGill Global? The erstwhile employers of Farage, JRM, and who still employ Ian Dale and Nick Ferrari? For every @mrjamesob is employed there, there’s >1 Tory.

If you’re thinking it makes no sense that Led by Donkeys keeps coming for Farage, it does if you know that they are still Greenpeace activists in a left-wing network linked to Global (LBC) and Carol Vorderman - that wants to eliminate all opposition to get its agenda through.

@mrmarkmillar The Telegraph article has a single perspective, emotional language and once again omits the policy context (the Tories burnt the roof off the country and emptied the current account to give to their pals then ran off). So a typical Tory rage bait piece omitting the “why”

@mrmarkmillar Are Agri-biz any differently affected since 24h ago? This looks like a raid in the Clarksons etc trying to avoid IHT. I don’t understand why you think that given 88% of farms aren’t impacted and the policy primarily targets large estates, this is the end for small family farming?

The govt just ended small family farming with the stroke of a pen. In 20 years all our farms will be owned by the same big American corporations. telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/10/3…

Really is incredible to think that the Tories announced compensation for victims of two scandals, then did nothing to arrange the money. Labour has had to put aside a massive chunk of the money they secured yesterday to fulfil a promise the previous government made.
