@truthreversion @mike_petriello You know the distance traveled to within 2-3 feet from release to catcher and time to within about 1/30 second. So distance to within 4% error or so, and time within about 9% error. That's what limits your ability to measure, not anything more sophisticated than that.

@mike_petriello Confidence intervals or bounds could be established, and then narrowed, but it would require a specialist with knowledge of kinematics, legacy AV and its artifacts, statistics, and computation to conduct such a study. It would be a good undergraduate or Master’s project.

You know, it just endlessly comes up that Nolan Ryan must have thrown 108 MPH back in the 1970s, due to him being tracked at 100 (at the plate), and the math working out that 100 at the plate is ~108 out of hand -- as velocity is tracked today. Sure, that'd work. Except ..

@TylerJBurch In my experience, R is unmatched for data exploration, but for actual programming, it's awkward.

little known programming fact: the programming language "R" is actually an abbreviation! It stands for "Ridiculous," their ethos for every design decision when constructing the language. (this fun fact brought to you from a weekend of still-unfinished debugging)

@BMMillsy Austin still had a little bit of that vibe when I moved there in 1998. College town + state government + a little tech around the fringes. It was already starting to outgrow that then, it definitely has in the three decades hence. It's the 26th largest metro area in the U.S.

Ooh…I love DBH, and I’m dying to read this!!! I’m enough of a fan that I actually feel delinquent that I haven’t already…may have to be next on my list. It was such a thrill to record with him after that all may be saved… I am in all of him and was slightly concerned about the possibility of saying something accidentally stupid and getting on his bad side 🤣

It’s okay to talk to God, when you aren’t sure if you believe in God! loved this conversation with Savannah Locke for many reasons, but especially 1) because I find a vulnerable conversation about prayer to be really grounding in this untethered time, 2) because I resonate with how leisurely she moves between talking about the way she talks to God, while never being entirely certain if she believes to begin with. We talk about HOW we relate to God (Savannah=more visual and less angsty, me=relentlessly verbal, historically more angsty, currently more ADHD 🤣). “Making Space for God to have a Say” is up on the zeitcast YouTube channel, & wherever you listen to audio podcasts: youtu.be/BuKtCrNKXZY?si…

@theboyonthebike McGilchrist sees this deep consciousness of the universe and the ground of being as the concept we call God. For Hart and those of us who see Jesus as the personal incarnation of that, we see a more intimately personal and loving aspect to the life flowing through all creation.

@theboyonthebike We've been taught to view the universe as a machine and God as an actor inside or outside it. But both authors argue that the universe is flowing and pulsing with potential and meaning and beauty.

Trans people are people. They deserve to be respected, cared for, listened to. It is wrong to treat them as political pawns. Jesus says we will be judged by how we treat the "least of these brothers and sisters of mine."

@tangotiger @cwyers I know I don't believe it, but part of why Colin and I work so well together is that we see the world differently

A fellow analyst @cwyers some 15 years ago quipped (terribly paraphrasing, and if he remembers, he'll give you the right quote): The Cubs played today, and all that we learned is that a baseball game was played and 27 outs was recorded by each team
Max Bay@choice_fielder

Stuff metrics are powerful predictors, but I believe people have taken this to mean that there’s something to glean from every outing when the irony is that they are powerful specifically because you learn almost everything from the first outing.

@spencer_josh I hope you're suggesting it's Jesus swallowing up death and sin in his love and redeeming the whole world, because I haven't found a better hope than that one.

@TheMagnusPI @pobguy Yes, we're saying the same thing. In the equation of motion, there's a term related to drag and a term related to lift. I was saying that you were talking about the term related to lift.

With typical drag, ball loses 10% of release velo, so ave velo is 5% of release. With 10mph headwind, drag is 20% greater, so ball loses 12 mph. Ave is then 6 mph lower than release, or 1% smaller. Note that ave velo determines flight time and square determines movement.

@TheMagnusPI Is this a modern version of Schroedinger's Cat? You might be at both talks, but we won't know which talk you will appear at until someone observes you at one or the other?

@theboyonthebike He says that's how we experience true communion with Christ. By experiencing rejection alongside Christ and the others sent outside the gates by the powerful, we find true community. I'm not eager for that. I don't think Bonhoeffer was, either. But what other way holds true life?

@theboyonthebike I think about Bonhoeffer a lot in these times. His essay on Die Nachfolge und das Kreuz is beautiful and poignant on this subject, maybe searing even. He references Christ, the scapegoat, outside the city gates.

@theboyonthebike Here we have no lasting city. But the city we have, that will last, is the city whose gates will never be shut. Perhaps that is the real city on a hill? What we have, if we follow Jesus outside the city, is something real and good and lasting. I pray.

@fastballs Nothing good or that I want to hear most of the time 🤣 No, I mostly think being willing to bear the reproach of religious people for the ways we will inevitably be included in the scapegoating if we stand with marginalized folks (is how I hear it now).

@fastballs Yes!!! I think about the line in Hebrews that he was crucified “outside the gate” all the time in this regard these days.
