In the case of Labour MPs in safe seats who retired at the last minute in late May, in the knowledge they'd get peerages for life - thus allowing Labour HQ to impose favoured candidates without local scrutiny - it's effectively a form of bribery.

I was extremely proud to close 2nd Reading of the Bill that will remove the right of hereditary peers to sit in the House of Lords. It cannot be right in modern Britain that there are Lords who serve in our legislature simply because of the family they were born into.

Solemn, like the embrace of St. Peter's Square.

@Samfr I heard one example where after the first day of postal votes being opened sent the Lab SG down to check the following day because the results were ‘interesting’. It’s quite common that indicative results are visible! Even if they shouldn’t be.

Spoken to a few Labour and Tory sources today. It's clear that as we enter the final weekend both sides believe the polls are broadly accurate, and there's no evidence of any significant swing back to the Tories. That could change. But at the moment its hard to see why it would.

@Samfr I’ve been told by one candidate in a con-LD marginal that the ‘postal votes are going in the right direction’ so they definitely can see the actual votes cast. Even if they’re not meant to. It can change tactics in the final week in tight seats.

@Samfr This is not true. Agents or their appointed reps can watch postal votes being opened; they can see some (not all) of how the votes have been cast; and they can get a good sense of where he postal votes are going in the right direction or not.
