@equalityAlec This is bullshit. If you don't disagree with someone and you can make a cogent argument about it, go ahead. But this vague unsupported accusations are an embarrassment.

Ezra Klein is a serious threat to a world of true equality and justice because he is so effective at masking his service to the ruling class through (often faux) intellectual cooptation of progressive people who otherwise would support much more profound social change.

@katrosenfield I find this surprising. And inconsistent. You are asking to give the benefit of the doubt to people with bad takes. While accusing me of being a bad faith debater when all i said is that people who are serious about a topic and trolls merit different treatment.

@katrosenfield Ok. Do you get what i'm trying to do? Is it fair to say that to have good public discourse, rules are needed, and that means being charitable and civil to people trying to make a serious point even if it goes against common sense, but that mocking trolls is public service?

@fsanchez1983 I don't think you do get what I'm trying to do, since you keep describing my writing on this as if it were something it is explicitly not. I can't make you stop doing this but it's not something I can engage with anymore

@katrosenfield I get what you are trying to do, but the current "debate" against women disenfranchisement has nothing to do with shaming HBO into killing an alternate history show. To encourage civil discourse, to protect one, we have to discourage the other one. So the bunch of turkeys matter.

@fsanchez1983 The original post didn't argue that, and I didn't argue that, so again: nobody here is arguing that. I don't care what a bunch of turkeys shouting in a room somewhere else are saying

@katrosenfield Of course you didn't. But people out there are arguing just for that. If we are talking about rules of civil discourse, people making an honest to make a point deserve protection. Trolls being piled on by other trolls has a pleasing symmetry.

Remember, the only power the mullahs have left is what we give them. They can really only fight an information battle, most of their hard kinetic power having been blown to bits. That’s why everything is then yelling, screaming, announcing, and declaring. They win when we react to them. They are exercising power from a position of powerlessness. Flip the script. All @realDonaldTrump has to do is call them on it. Throw up the blockade, no slack, no exceptions. Unleash the IDF. Restart the fight for a few days, taking out those juicy targets we no doubt have been watching for 2+ months. And publicly refuse “negotiations” until we hear them say what we want to hear. Call their bluff.🇺🇸

@jbraunstein914 @HistoryBoomer It is well established that humans estimate probability with memory, which in turn is correlated with emotional impact. So it is not strange that horrific events live a bigger mark. But that still means they are a poor basis for public policy.

I think liberals have a tendency to misunderstand how people view these things. A better analogy is terrorism. Terrorist attacks are statistically very rare but create terror; a climate of fear. Statistically rare but horrific crimes do the same thing, especially in densely populated areas.

The fact that certain crimes are statistically rare is important. School mass killings are horrible, but gun advocates are probably right that they are too rare to be a reason to change gun policy. Police killing unarmed men is horrible, but also incredibly rare. Cries of "defund the police" are a foolish emotional overreaction. Likewise, subway shoves are scary, but they are super rare. About 25 people a year are shoved onto the tracks (almost all shoves are non-fatal). That's out of 1.2 BILLION subway rides a year. Your chance of getting shoved on any particular trip is 1 in 48,000,000. This doesn't mean we can't do anything. Earlier this year, Ross Falzone was pushed down subway stairs by a mentally ill man with a criminal history. That dude should have been in jail or institutionalized. But "act" doesn't mean "panic." New York is a generally safe city, even if it still has more disorder than it should. Its citizens (and visitors) live in a great city but deserve an even better one. And we don't need to overreact to "statistically rare" incidents.
Rufus Firefly@RufusFirefly24

@HistoryBoomer @saltycrocosmile You should go visit the people in the hospital who have been set on fire, or slashed, or pushed onto the tracks and reassure them that these incidents are “statistically rare.” I’m sure that will be of great comfort to them.

@TedFran03073128 @RichardHanania Don't be an idiot. Of course, the number is 0. But if you are going to single out a group of people as the main perpetrator of a country's sexual assaults, you better have the receipts to back it up. That report doesn't, and now it is backfiring on them.

Amazing level of BS is behind the estimate of 250,000 white girls victimized by "Muslim rape gangs." What they did was: 1) Come up with a number for Telford, Oxford, and Rotherham, the center of the scandal 2) Extrapolate to the rest of the country Imagine if, to calculate murders in America, you looked at Detroit, Chicago, and Baltimore and then assumed all of America has the same murder rate. But wait, there's more! Even the original numbers are nonsense. To get the original estimate for Oxford, they included all supposed victims of sexual exploitation or grooming, by Muslims or anyone else. This means that they assumed 100% of victims were white girls and 100% of the perpetrators were Muslims for all cases of sexual exploitation! The report also switches between saying there were 250,000 victims, and 250,000 instances of victimization, without any explanation why. For Telford, they went back 40 years, though I don't think that there were Muslim rape gangs in the 1980s. The Oxford number includes all instances of "grooming," whether or not they involved sexual contact at all, and not much is shared about the methodology. It is a complete guess. I often hear rightists say "the liberals lie so I don't believe anything." What conclusion are we supposed to draw from the fact that rightists are this indifferent to facts?
