Lots of people under-estimate the amount of batteries soon to come online on Australia's NEM. Within a few years the NEM will have 15GW/40GWh of utility battery storage. Plus a similar amount of residential batteries. 40GWh is sufficient to flatten these demand profiles /1

Angus Taylor has quit the Liberal frontbench, indicating a leadership challenge against leader Sussan Ley is imminent. “I don’t believe Sussan ley is in a position to lead the party as it needs to be,” he said to reporters on Wednesday. Read more: bit.ly/4cm4RY4

@ChrisMinnsMP is it reasonable for a child to walk 2.8km to and from school with their backpack full of books and a laptop each day? The restriction on Opal travel passes for school kids “close” to school seems arbitrary and unfair.

I’ve seen Sydney trains delays before, but this evening there are no trains between Central and Strathfield. Absolute chaos.

Good morning with good news: Renewables jump from 30% of global electricity in 2023 to 35% in 2025! W&S rise from 13% in 2023 to 18% in 2025. Wow! RE surpasses coal in 2025! RE generates more electricity than any other source by 2025. Data in IEA's 2024 Electricity Update.

The Coalition has turned to an emissions-free technology with a long and contentious history — nuclear fission. These are the numbers you should keep in mind when thinking about its place in Australia’s energy transition. ab.co/3yZuRXS

@M_a_rke @TMFScottP Why is that a problem? Still cheaper than nuclear. And well done on finding the worst 5 minute period. SA is ~ currently 70% renewables. Gas will play a similar role under the nuclear scenario because nuclear can’t be rapidly ramped up/down the way gas can.

I'm mindful that many of the 'never nuclear' are worried about the risks. I get that, but I wonder how much is emotional and how much is rational? Yes, nuclear proliferation (weapons-wise) is also not ideal. 6/n

@TMFScottP That’s fine. How would you regulate the market for the best outcome in the next 15 years? Clearly we want to optimise for lower emissions as soon as possible. Does the option that requires more capital for a slower decarbonisation deserve a leg up?

@hendot So, I've never been 'free market', but 'well regulated markets'. :) But also, markets don't solve everything (ETS, Water, NDIS etc). The trick is to know when the/a market is the solution and when regulation/government action is required.

@TMFScottP You’re the kind of guy to trust the free market. CSIRO has shown renewables and storage to be cheaper by a factor of 2-3x compared to nuclear. We are already ~38% renewables in the grid. Within the 15 years to build nuclear we would be close to 100% renewables. Easy choice.
