@amaldorai @_mgriisser @GrantSlatton I recall that the only Cypriot GM transferred to Greece so there are no GMs there anymore, so to me it's more likely the Californian is stronger

last night newt somehow hurt himself while playing . he was obviously in a lot of pain we immediately took him to the emergency vet where he eventually got X-rays confirming a likely musculoskeletal injury but no visible fracture etc . poor baby is obviously still in a lot of pain — hunched back/tail tuck, not wanting to move, shaking , etc. we are on bedrest trying to manage his pain and discomfort as best we can
very sad time here. please say a little prayer for Newton

@Teslimatttt Can you tell the difference between the males and females?😂
English

@TripHazard11 @SpaghettiKozak @aisjbdiaja @Nacilepxd yes but the US public and Iranian public being angry at the same amount has different outcomes, e. g. the US is very unlikely to be willing to kill the same number of protestors that the Iranian government is willing to
English

@hunterchen_7 @SpaghettiKozak @aisjbdiaja @Nacilepxd The US public are not going to be as angry as the Iranian employees getting IOUs for pay while nearly everything imported (like tires for delivery vehicles) disappears.

@meltingdiodes @yacineMTB if you want to take the "free market service" idea to the extremes, then kids should be allowed to freely access porn, which clearly is not ok. the real iffy part is doing age verification without it being a privacy nightmare.
English

@yacineMTB i'm torn. govt telling citizens what free market services they can/can't access = bad. otoh, parents are STUPID and allowing their kids brains to rot
English

@fictitiousfruit @oinkeeboinky @justalexoki most ppl can probably get to like 2000+ by dedicating 1-2 yrs of their life but it's basically impossible to get to the pro level if you only start playing seriously as an adult (pro as in you can live off of it as a profession via coaching & playing tournaments)
English

To be fair to your original point though, some of the best chess players i met were in federal prison. When you have no actual responsibilities and nothing to do you can get really good at whatever you want. So I guess it’s less about rich or poor and more about patience and will. Two qualities that will definitely carry you far regardless.
English

because its not, being good at chess is a sign of being good at chess. that's it. these people generally don't seem to be too good at literally anything else. it does not generalize at all
EP@eptwts
if being good at chess is a sign of high intelligence, why isn't the average grandmaster rich?
English

@justalexoki the only conscious and self-aware person on earth rn is me, sorry
English

there is at best 10m "conscious and self-aware people living on earth rn"

Max@minordissent
Nah it’s like 100M
English

@fictitiousfruit @oinkeeboinky @justalexoki some countries subsidize chess stuff & introduce it in school, etc to encourage more people to pursue it as a career, e. g India and some post-Soviet countries; they output a good number of GMs, but in these cases they still can't afford to be too poor (for the reasons you gave)
English

@oinkeeboinky @justalexoki You can argue those things came first and made it possible to give everything to a game. Poor people don’t have the luxury of being good at chess; they have priorities like working and keeping food on the table.
English

@oinkeeboinky @justalexoki the average chess grandmaster more than likely has well off parents who could afford coaching for them as a kid. there are exceptions of course, but that is the norm, especially in the US.
English

@justalexoki But have you asked, how many are homeless? or in severe poverty? it surely does help them but not by alot
English

@SpaghettiKozak @aisjbdiaja @Nacilepxd the US can probably bear the costs longer than Iran can, as in they'd run out of money & resources sooner. but in terms of the people being unhappy, the US wouldn't be able to last as long
English

@AB202281146189 @Itisabadword @Bret_Sears @JustinTrudeau the voters will hold him accountable. the same way orban was held accountable.
English

@hunterchen_7 @Itisabadword @Bret_Sears @JustinTrudeau Campaign agendas mean nothing. Zero. Politicians fear no accountability. Who is to hold him to what he ran on? No one. He had that policy to deceive.
English

@Itisabadword @Bret_Sears @JustinTrudeau Magyar's immigration policy are more strict than Orban's lol
English

@Bret_Sears @JustinTrudeau Yup now the are going to become a globalists cesspool. They will start bringing in mass amounts of migration and destroy the country.
English

@TrueSlazac @NotSoFluffyCat1 I feel like stein's associations with putin would have to pull her more auth or is that not how it works
English

@NotSoFluffyCat1 not against you but god I hate this website, DK is nowhere near Die Linke or Jill Stein, the political compass website is so deliberately deceitful

English

@hunterchen_7 @e_victoriann @actsmaniac although 53-35 is a large margin, hungary's electoral system isn't fully proportional and caused the defeat to be disproportionately worse for fidesz
(i'm not defending orbán here, he literally made the electoral system worse by gerrymandering constituencies)

English

@e_victoriann @actsmaniac so they must REALLY hate him for him to lose like this
English

@actsmaniac Its a free but not fair democracy, the electoral system is gerrymandered to benefit Orban and the courts & media are controlled by orban and his allies
English

@TheANRP @fuckyourbs1 @BasketCasePA i would like to believe that as well but unfortunately i'm not certain it's true.
English

@hunterchen_7 @fuckyourbs1 @BasketCasePA i dont think theres any human being that chooses how to vote based on hasan
English

It's very funny seeing all the people that dunked on Ezra's "Charlie Kirk did Politics the Right Way" defend this piece that's based off of the same principle.

@Mattxduchak @dravidavastgote @schitcoin madrid had safe injection sites before vancouver (2000 vs 2003). i agree that canada is very progressive, i just don't think i necessarily agree with "most progressive in the world"
English

@hunterchen_7 @dravidavastgote @schitcoin You also didn’t look at safe injection sites
Even most recently. Spain called out the US out months after Canada did. Spain did lead in denying the US Air Force access and recalling its ambassador from Israel. But since WW2 Canada has been consistently on the progressive edge.

I want people to look at these pictures and remember that Justin was PM for 10 years. This guy was a ruthless politician with a vice like grip on the Canadian Liberal leadership and saw off 3 Tory challengers and now he’s at coachella with his pop star gf.
