Just learned something genuinely bizarre about the Maldives. If you are inside a private resort island, bikinis, alcohol, and Western tourist norms are completely fine. But step onto a local inhabited island and suddenly bikinis are banned outside designated “bikini beaches,” and you are expected to dress conservatively in public. You are expected to dress modestly, covered shoulders, covered thighs (no short shorts or revealing tops).
I honestly find that split deeply outdated, conservative, and weird. The same country is selling one version of itself to tourists with money and enforcing another on ordinary public spaces. It feels less like culture and more like a controlled bubble where freedom is allowed only inside commercial zones. That kind of double standard is hard to admire in 2026.
Funny how you never hear about these things from crusaders of freedom. 🫣

@GabbbarSingh He is correct. Neither the U.S. Navy NOR Iran lob missiles at civilian ships. Iran's blockade using fast boats works since the strait is just ~22km. You will need a LARGE, full fledged blue navy to block 200km. And China has 20x !!! the number of our ships.

You cannot buy a new gas turbine until 2030. Order books at GE, Siemens, and Mitsubishi stretch to 2029. Turbine prices have nearly tripled since 2019. Every AI data center needs power and every gas plant needs a turbine. And every turbine has one part that bottlenecks the entire industry: The blade. It has to survive in gas 500°C above the melting point of the metal it's made from and spin at up to 20,000 RPM under 10,000 g of centrifugal force. Each blade is grown as a single crystal of nickel superalloy, pulled through a vacuum furnace at 3 mm per minute. A set of blades costs $600,000 and takes 90 weeks to grow. The same metallurgy powers modern jet engines. Only 3 companies on Earth can build one. China spent $42 billion trying to catch up. They bought a Russian fighter engine, took it apart, and copied every part. Their copy ran 30 hours between overhauls versus 400 for the original. Modern Western engines run 4,000. You can reverse engineer the shape of a turbine blade. You cannot reverse engineer 60 years of metallurgy.

I travelled through Great Nicobar today. These are the most extraordinary forests I have ever seen in my life. Trees older than memory. Forests that took generations to grow. The people on this island are equally beautiful - both the adivasi communities and the settlers - but they are being robbed of what is rightfully theirs. The government calls what it is doing here a “Project.” What I have seen is not a project. It is millions of trees marked for the axe. It is 160 square kilometres of rainforest condemned to die. It is communities that have been ignored while their homes have been snatched away. This is not development. This is destruction dressed in development’s language. So I will say it plainly, and I will keep saying it: what is being done in Great Nicobar is one of the biggest scams and gravest crimes against this country’s natural and tribal heritage in our lifetime. It must be stopped. And it can be stopped - if Indians choose to see what I have seen.

The Great Nicobar Project is a strategic necessity for India. Located just 140–150 km from the Strait of Malacca, a chokepoint through which roughly 25% of global trade, 35% of oil, and 20% of gas by sea, flows, it sits near a route critical to China's energy and trade lifelines.
Beyond the transshipment terminal, it is the military installation that matters most. India needs a stronger naval presence in the region, something that becomes essential in the event of a conflict.
GNP is as important and critical as Siachen, Siliguri Corridor and other essential posts for India.
