We integrated. We paid in. We followed the rules, for a decade. All of us entered the system before 2021 (Pre-Boris Wave), under the rules that existed then. If the government now says settlement should take 10 years, fair enough. But many of us have already done that, so why should we be asked to do another 10? Changing the rules after the fact is unfair and damaging. Transitional protections aren’t optional, they’re essential. @ShabanaMahmood, @MikeTappTweets and the @UKLabour government owe long-residency migrants clear answers, and fair transitional protections.

@TheSnowDreamer 6 months ago I had a small metacarpal fracture in my right arm’s wrist. My pinky finger has sunk into my wrist a bit making it shorted than my left arm’s pinky. 6 months have gone by and I still feel the gnarly pain in my wrist. It’s the worst and limited my mobility in the gym.

I’ve just come home from Guys I am now in a sling my dominant arm annoyingly. The nice Nurse Practitioner said she saw no evidence of deformity or fracture in wrist. However, clinical presentation and my medical history made her not 100% sure with the bruising less typical of sprain, swelling and limited upwards down motion. I’m going to get a call on Wednesday she took pictures so orthopaedic team will review. The trouble is with my bone condition breaks are more likely and I’ve had superficial ones before when X-ray did not pick them up and then MRI did.

Yes, for the 10-year long residence route, you can combine time spent under different visa categories, including the 3 years of BSc (Student Visa), 2 years of PSW (Graduate Visa), and 5 years of work (Skilled Worker Visa or another qualifying visa). As long as you maintain continuous lawful residence and meet other requirements like the absence limits, English proficiency, and passing the "Life in the UK" test, you can apply for ILR under this route. Keep in mind that absences from the UK must comply with updated rules: no more than 180 days in any rolling 12-month period after April 2024, and stricter limits apply to earlier periods.

Yes, time on the Graduate visa (formerly PSW) counts toward the 10-year long residence route for ILR, as it's lawful residence not in the excluded categories like visitor or short-term student. Ensure continuous stay with absences under 180 days in any 12 months. Brutal truth: Overstay or gap out, and you're toast.

So in all of this, have they decided to scrap the 10years long residence route to settlement? Cos any care worker that has stayed in the country for 10years can apply for ILR through that and not have to wait for the proposed 15years, no? Not well thought out I think.

@joseph_gellman from what I have seen, abolishing the 10 year long residence route to ILR (as they seem to be doing) might fuck over ppl who have been on student visas for undergraduate + masters + PhD with potentially some breaks of skilled worker or grad visa in between.

This study has been doing the rounds since it dropped. I thought I'd address a few of the claims. First by premise, then by statistics. Conclusion first: the claims made here rely on some heavy assumptions, statistical mistakes, and key omissions.

You know how everyone is freaking about how bad new immigrants are for public finances? I did the math and: even considering only new Boriswave immigrants, the average new immigrant salary was still higher than the average British national. On Substack: laurenpolicy.com/p/are-recent-i…

According to the latest uk rules announced today, you need at least 10 years to get “permanent stay” in uk. The good thing is that if you are already in the uk, this rule will not apply to you. Except you switch your visa after the rule starts. Then you will need 10years too.

2018-2021 was peak net migration years majority being students, Let's say 250k per year of those manage to find work 2028-2031 (election period) they become permanent residents mostly via long residence It's too attractive politically to either move out long residence -

People on the 10-year long residence route are the UK’s most integrated migrants — educated here from a young age, English-speaking, tax-paying, and socially embedded — yet the current proposals risk penalising them precisely because their lives span multiple lawful visas rather than a single category. We urge @ShabanaMahmood to address our cohort and provide protection. #ILR #IndefiniteLeaveToRemain #UKsettlement
