I will simply never recover from reading this sentence: "Since Georgia implemented work requirements in 2020, they have spent twice as much on Deloitte consultants and administrative costs as on healthcare for people."

Today, Luke Farrell explains how complex eligibility requirements have turned America’s safety net into a lucrative revenue stream for monopolistic private contractors.

PSA for anyone getting into raw milk: The FDA doesn't want you to know this, but raw milk is 100% safe if you heat it up to 162°F for just 15 seconds, then cool it to <40°F within 2 hours.

@AynRand_is_Dead @miniapeur i once read that jobs exist for two reasons only - to save time or to save money. on the whole, academic jobs do neither (at least in the short term). i don't agree with it but it's the way things are.

@miniapeur if industry and academia want workers, industry and academia can pay for training them. Education is not jobs training. An educated citizenry is the goal. When we are making decisions as a society, it's important to have knowledge resources (people) as varied as possible.

A fundamental problem with academia is that it trains more people in highly specialised roles than either the academic or industrial job markets can absorb. Logically, this imbalance could be addressed in two ways: either the government could significantly increase funding to hire more researchers, or academia could reduce the number of students it admits. But of course, neither of these things is going to happen. Academic labs need cheap labour to maximise their metrics (number of publications, grant applications, etc.) and the government is... well, the government. As a result, it is ultimately the students who pay the price, facing deteriorating conditions, insane competition and uncertain prospects.

Yes you’re 💯 right . The post has bitterness because I’m witnessing unfairness and I don’t have enogh power to do anything.. . I know I have choices. And overall I am proud of the group I built and we are doing great work. But the system has gone way off track and it’s important that people realize how much harder it is to be a postdoc now , and how much greater the sacrifices. Even if nothing can be done to fix it immediately , the acknowledgment itself is important !

8 years. Legal challenges. Fires. Floods. COVID. Australia’s Cannabis Components Study-the first to work directly with the community studying street cannabis-is finally published. I’m forever grateful to the Nimbin community for their generosity & commitment to cannabis science.

"Treating the root cause" is a trope abused in alternative/integrative/functional medicine to sow distrust in mainstream medicine. Ironically, a scientifically implausible “root cause” is often treated with pseudoscientific approaches (e.g., spine subluxations for all diseases; past life regressions for PTSD; balancing energy for back pain, etc.). given that penguins were discovered centuries before the adoption of black tie/tuxedos, did early explorers still think of penguins as formal? or did they just look like casual birds until the 19th century
