@MichaelRosenYes @novaramedia I live in Manchester and I’ve even got a tv, social media and know that the people of Manchester have taken part in marches against the Gaza genocide, Burnham is scared of upsetting his backers and the media turning on him, spineless coward

Labour leadership hopeful Andy Burnham has refused to call the Israeli military’s actions in Gaza a genocide. Asked about the violence in an interview with the Guardian, he said: “I can’t judge things of that enormity from where I am as mayor of Greater Manchester.” He added: “But I do have concerns about the disproportionate nature of what has happened in terms of the destruction, and there has to be a full process of investigation and accountability.” The world-leading International Association of Genocide Scholars last year declared that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza. Israel has killed at least 72,000 Palestinians there since 7 October 2023 and experts quoted by the BMJ say the actual toll is far higher. Burnham became a member of Labour Friends of Israel in 2015 and during a Labour leadership bid the same year described the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement against Israel as “spiteful”. He also promised to make Israel his first state visit if he won - calling the country a “democracy that has a long history of protecting minorities and promoting civil rights”. The Muslim Vote, an organisation that monitors politicians’ views on Palestine, regards Burnham’s position as “unclear”. Burnham supports a two-state solution and has denounced illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank. He visited the area in 2012 as part of a parliamentary delegation with Labour Friends of Palestine and the Council for Arab-British Understanding. He was one of three senior Labour figures who in October 2023 released a statement breaking with Keir Starmer’s position and asking him to call for a ceasefire. Burnham, along with London mayor Sadiq Khan and Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar, said Israel had the right to take "targeted action within international law". However, they said they had "profound concerns" about the numbers killed in Gaza and the denial of aid. The Manchester mayor also backed the formal recognition of a Palestinian state, co-signing a letter in June 2025 demanding the UK government take action to protect the two-state framework. The UK went on to recognise a Palestinian state in September 2025.

@LeftieStats @guardian You really are the worst thing the British left has ever seen - completely and utterly disingenuous by splicing the quote to suit your agenda. It's clear you don't actually ever want positive change in the UK as long as you can keep screaming incoherently from the sidelines.

@CHaesemeyer @bat020 If he said it was a genocide the media and his backers will turn against him, and he’s too power hungry to lose his third attempt to be PM, snivelling little chnt

@bat020 There’s no way he would call it a genocide because if he did acknowledge that it would create legal obligations for the British state if he were to become PM, and that would be extremely awkward for everyone involved wouldn’t it

Burnham on Gaza: he wouldn't call it a genocide, but he does have concerns about the disproportionate nature of what has happened in terms of the destruction. theguardian.com/politics/2026/…

@soclp_uk @LindaSayle So Burnham is only concerned about 'disproportionate destruction' and not the repeated Israeli war crimes inflicting deliberate death, maiming and deprivation on so many innocents?

@AndyBurnhamGM . Pompous cunt. Just re-read that sentence again. Puffed up turd. Far too busy with his important job to find the time to look at a potential genocide. Simply impossible. 'I can't judge things of that enormity from where I am as mayor of Greater Manchester '

@soclp_uk He lives in Manchester, does he not use social media, have a TV or notice the marches in Manchester against the Gaza genocide? He has not guts and doesn’t even deserve to be mayor of Manchester never mind a potential replacement for Starmer another genocide denier

Asked whether he considers the situation in Gaza to be a genocide, Andy Burnham — currently a leading contender to succeed Keir Starmer as Labour leader — declined to use the term. He said there must be a full investigation and accountability process, while expressing concern about what he described as the disproportionate scale of destruction in Gaza. Source: The Guardian

Andy Burnham won't call what is happening in Gaza a genocide. There will be absolutely no change in foreign policy from the King in the North.
