Patronising other people as intellectually lazy is a bit rich when your position is "Everything I dislike is identical to everything else I dislike".

this is such an interesting misconception about british people - the politics and standard of living in britain are miserable yes, but the average british mum loves getting on it to an extent that the american mind can scarcely comprehend
Gally🐩@gally420

I'm really fascinated by how the British are such a dour and miserable people and yet they seem really, really good at doing lots of nose drugs while dancing to funky beats. Work hard play hard I guess

@bat020 @AxisofElvis God, tribal, yes. Why I'm so glad I spent the 80s staying inside my own head, only popping out now and again to attend goth discos. I think by that time I was a huge fan of Christopher Norris, and he was very agin the waffly side of post structuralism, so I was a bit inoculated.

if you want a taste of what the 80s were actually like at the time here's how i-D magazine summarised the postmodernism and poststructuralism debate. from its "encyclopaedia of the decade", published in 1990.

I was young in the 80s/90s in the UK. Our house was the first in the street to get a microwave oven. One time my mum looked up from peeling the spuds to see a neighbour outside the kitchen window, glaring through it jealously. People have no idea what life was like back then.

"That an African American man played a massive and pivotal role in three seminal musical forms seemingly dominated by Caucasian artists – folk rock, prog rock, and proto-punk – is one of the most tragically untold stories in popular music’s history."

I finished @weizman_eyal's Ungrounding last night and it has left me overwhelmed & speechless. I'll have a lot more to say about it but suffice it to say for now that, while some extraordinary books have been written about Gaza, this one for me is the most important. Here's why:

The idea that you should never “bully” anyone under any circumstances is whack and not credible. It is also not a behavior that anyone I’ve ever met has consistently exhibited, ever, frankly

In a shop listening to Radiohead’s The Bends and it’s *just so lame*. A reedy, humourless, public-school sound with absolutely nothing to say to us thirty years later

@littmath my old logic supervisor (Thomas Forster) warned me when I said that extensionality was kinda obvious and unarguable that it doesn't work if you have any kind of typed universe. eg Russell had to have a distinct empty set at every level of the hierarchy.

Most of the time when you talk about “the” [mathematical object] (e.g. the natural numbers) you mean that any two instantiations are canonically isomorphic. But with the empty set any two instantiations are literally equal!

went on a 5-plus-minute rant about some mathematical text that used the phrase “an empty set”. There’s only one empty set! All empty sets are equal! Call it *the* empty set!!!

@AxisofElvis the 80s were very tribal and I was team MM/i-D as OPPOSED to those NME/Face types. so I took these paragraphs very seriously, despite having precious little idea what they meant.

@bat020 Curious that NME is fogey modernist and MM is poststructuralist. Intuitively, this sounds about right.

anecdote for those that knew her
bat020@bat020

@JamesJouissance @Elroy_Muscato so this would have been about 25 years ago and I'd just been told/ordrred to do a party meeting on the Kashmir situation, which I knew nothing about, and was clearly looking shaken. Julie W who ran the Anti Nazi League saw this and asked me what had just happened. >>
