@jdegoes I just finished the book Extreme Ownership. One of the best stories was Navy SEAL instructors noticed one boat crew that won every race while another consistently finished last. The leader of the losing crew complained about his sub par teammates.

I was once made manager and told I would be responsible for the success of the unit. "I need to make some changes," I said, after understanding the dysfunction. "No, we need you to do it with this team." I quit, because you can't be held responsible without having authority.

@ChiefScientist @propensive It bothers me too. However, when it comes to this open letter, Brian Clapper/Travis Brown appear to be the public face/mastermind of it, respectively. But most of the online ire is directed towards the Scala Center. I want to make sure I am frustrated with the right people.

@TomekGodzik @fbrasisil @rolandkuhn This Open Scala Letter is troubling. If there are moderators who are still signatories, they lack the judgment to be in that position. I love Scala, but I hate what is going on. That GitHub repo needs to go.

Tomasz, you can’t genuinely apologize for someone else’s thoughts. I’ve noticed this kind of alienating apology is common with Scala moderators. It’s not professional and reinforces the perception of lack of accountability. If the Scala Center director is helping with the replies, make sure to use the opportunity to ask about the policies for use of discriminatory language to exclude people and if retaliation for reporting on CoC issues is appropriate 😉

Couldn't agree more with Linus here. Making your code running as fast as possible (or just faster than someone's else code) is the best feeling you can get from programming The issue that it is extremely hard to find the project that will pay you for instruction level efficiency
