rare semi-serious post in an effort to help newly interested young people find their way in the crypto industry if you are young and either work full time in crypto or want to, here are 3 recommendations: 1) learn to value opportunities --we're gonna use the "aim, shoot" method. first you need to learn to aim, then you need to shoot. this part is about aiming-- you need to understand the value of an opportunity. all opportunities are NOT created equal. if your mindset is "i'll take any job i can get i just want to work in the space" you will get your wish, but you will also waste a ton of time in getting to your end goal. i worked in VC at @cmsholdings for almost 3 years -- i was very privileged to get to start in VC since its not usually an entry level job but i got my foot in the door as an intern and then grew in responsibility from there. the ENTIRE JOB of VC is to determine the value of an investment opportunity and then either buy or pass. this was a fantastic way to figure out how smart people determined value and calculated risk in crypto. venture is a great route to hone this skill but there are many other ways -- read long form content from smart people you look up to, talk to other people at VCs and ask why they invested or passed on given investments, deep dive your own areas of interest in crypto, etc long story short, you need to set yourself up for success, and to do that you need to have a good lens for deciding what will be successful. you are learning to pick winners. it is a skill that you can and should develop as a rule of thumb, i'd recommend buy side (either VC or liquid fund) if you can get in there, or research positions where you can learn from smart folks and grow your network 2) take calculated risk(s) that move you towards your end game --this is of course the "shoot" part in "aim, shoot"-- i started by saying "if you are young" so i'm assuming anyone still reading this is young. if you're young and working in crypto, risk is essentially your life. you can afford to take risks because you have time. in the wise words of @DegenSpartan (rip) "You get a short period of time after you graduate to hyper-gamble into elite status or you end up wage cucking for life." in general, this likely looks like joining a mid to late stage startup and receiving equity as part of your compensation -- you NEED upside in its success. if there's not enough, then you aren't being compensated for the risk (most startups die, most crypto startups die + you'll be embarrassed to say you work there lol) so now that you've decided the opportunity is high value and you also like the level of risk involved: try to make the greatest positive impact that you can. pour everything you can into doing your job as well as possible. now that you're a legitimate player in the industry you will also grow a network based on your work. if the startup doesn't work out this time, you will have a large number of people who trust you, know you're a good actor and would be willing to hire / vouch for you while starting out on your next path. maybe you 1 shot it and the first company you join works out. maybe it takes 2 or 3 tries. you never know 🤷♂️ 3) create an online presence this is probably my #1 recommendation for young people in crypto (in hindsight, maybe i should have put it first) you should be growing an online presence. it could be twitter, a blog, maybe youtube, maybe farcaster or tiktok if that's what the kids are doing these days. but in general you really should create an online brand for yourself -- this acts as your resume in crypto i'd recommend finding 2-3 things that you are good at or interested in and combining them. it's much easier to be top 20% at 3 things, and combine them to become top 1% at the intersection, than to become top 1% at a single thing. find your strengths then make that your thing examples: -- you are a smart contract engineer at an auditing firm but you get zoomer humor and can make memes -- write simplified breakdowns of hacks that happen using memes for better attention capture -- you are an extroverted BD person at a bigger company that loves gaming and is funny -- start a podcast drafting behind the company brand to grow your channel and interview the top crypto gaming people -- you are autist with no social skills but love KOL drama on crypto twitter -- create thread breakdowns of your favorite KOLs and where they came from (completely kidding do not do this its omega cringe) **if you have any other combos you're interest in, drop your strengths as replies and i can help come up with ideas** the amount of opportunities, conversations, chats, cool people met, etc that come from growing an online presence is hard to overstate doors will open for you that would never exist for someone else because of your online accounts. trust and reputation on the internet go a very long way and will essentially compound over the course of your entire career. its also uniquely suited for young people -- no one will judge a 22 year old for saying "ZEC is gonna rip this cycle" or posting a bad meme. starting when your 30, however, affords less leeway. i'm somewhere between 23 and 37 years old (won't say) and i still larp as an intern on twitter because A) its fun and B) it opens a lot of doors career wise. for example if i need to talk to the CMO of Lido (not sure if that's even a real person i'm making it up) its easy to get that conversation because there is a level of trust associated with this online account. i won't justify this point any more, but i do think its very useful frfr and you will probably have fun doing it ---- crypto is the land of opportunity for young people and is potentially the single best industry in the world for smart and ambitious young folks to work in (especially right now since Bitcoin is ripping (jk but kinda real)) at any rate this is very out of line with the usual stuff i post so i hope at least 1 person finds it useful or a few young people reply that are looking to work in the industry then maybe i'll write more stuff like this but if it flops and is embarrassing we can forget this ever happened. ty
