MULTICHOICE CANCELS SHOWMAX MultiChoice has confirmed it will shut down Showmax after years of heavy financial losses. The streaming platform, launched in 2015 and relaunched in 2024, struggled to achieve commercial viability in Africa’s challenging digital market. Showmax recorded losses of about R2.6-billion in 2024, rising to nearly R4.9-billion in 2025, which significantly reduced MultiChoice’s profits. MultiChoice plans to replace Showmax with a new in-house streaming service designed for African market conditions while continuing to invest in content, technology and strategic partnerships.
