In the latest issue of Open Wavelength, Eyra Abraham, Founder of Lisnen Inc., delivers an important analysis with the article  "The Hidden Bias in Artificial Intelligence Used for Public Safety Communications". As emergency communications centres increasingly turn to AI to manage workload pressures, Eyra points out that these systems unintentionally exclude the 27% of Canadians living with disabilities. From AI-assisted policing tools to NLP driven 911 systems and crisis communications platforms, she demonstrates how data gaps, inaccessible design, and limited disability representation can translate into real-world risk. This article is not just a critique, but also a roadmap. Drawing on her lived experience and technical expertise, Eyra introduces the HUMAN Framework, offering practical guidance for building inclusive, equitable AI systems in public safety. Her message is clear: innovation without inclusion can deepen inequity. For leaders in public safety communications, policy, and AI development, this article is essential reading, and a call to design systems that truly serve everyone. openwavelength.ca/index.php/OW/a…

Proud to share the publication of our latest article, “Seven Ways AI Is Transforming 911 Emergency Response,” now live in Open Wavelength. Authored by Peter Frijio of NiCE Public Safety, the article explores how Artificial Intelligence is no longer a future concept in emergency communications—it’s already making a real impact. From helping dispatchers prioritize calls and automate time-consuming tasks to improving call-handling accuracy, AI is freeing up critical time for what matters most: delivering faster, higher-quality emergency response. In a profession where every second counts, AI is emerging as a powerful partner—enhancing operational efficiency while supporting the people on the front lines.  Read the article here: openwavelength.ca/index.php/OW/a…

We're proud to share that E-Comm employees have received two prestigious national awards from @APCOCanada, recognizing both a team and an individual for their exceptional work in emergency communications. Our Fire Dispatch team received APCO Canada's Team Award for their outstanding efforts and professionalism during one of the most challenging fire response operations in E-Comm's history. On August 6, 2024, they responded to multiple large structure fires across Vancouver, including a four-alarm blaze that spread to eight homes and involved a crane collapse. Their calm approach and coordinated communication under intense pressure ensured an effective yet compassionate response, showcasing exemplary emergency communications. We also congratulate Tanya Silletta, named Trainer of the Year. Since joining E-Comm as a training specialist in 2019, Tanya has trained over 100 police call takers and 50 police dispatchers, meaning that 74% of our current employees at the Vancouver Island centre have learned their roles directly from her. Her dedication, compassion and mentorship have had a lasting impact on our organization and the next generation of emergency communicators. We're incredibly proud of Tanya and our Fire Dispatch team for being recognized nationally for their leadership, teamwork and commitment to public safety. Congratulations!
