**LasVegasTodd** As of mid-2026, California has spent ~$14.6–15 billion on its high-speed rail project (mostly planning, land, and Central Valley civil works). In the initial Merced–Bakersfield segment (171 miles under construction), over 80 miles of guideway and 60+ major structures are complete. No high-speed track/rail has been laid yet. Track and systems installation is scheduled to begin later this year on the ~119-mile guideway section. Full Phase 1 (SF–LA) cost estimates now range $98–126B+.
