I think the point of the Alignment crowd is the idea that the character should be a character, and not whatever the player feels like that day.
It is in the name:
"Role" playing game.
Not "Daily self-discovery" game.
The mechanism isn't really the key. Alignment on a character sheet is just a tool to remind the player of the role they chose to take on in crafting the character. The point is staying in character, particularly useful when a situation might rub wrong against the player's natural response reflexes.
When I played a Lawful Good or Neutral Evil, it was a workout for me, as I'm pretty CG by nature, and sometimes I needed our DM to remind me of what I had agreed to try and do.
Not calling for absolute inflexibility, but the reward of staying in character includes expanding oneself into different ways of thinking.
In a society adrift in relativism, a hard character alignment is a helpful check.

Because the Eternal Struggle of Law and Chaos is fundamental to the sword and sorcery spirit upon which D&D was founded.
Because battles between Good and Evil are integral to high fantasy, which is where most D&D campaigns actually operate.

ACKSHUALLY they did make this game.
It wasn’t good gameplay-wise, but the story was okay.
4e was great when it wasn’t called D&D. The second it was called “Gamma World 7th Edition”, it sold like hotcakes. People loved it.

They made this game. It’s called 4e and everyone hated it. I still contend if they called it anything BUT D&D people would still be playing it.

@DungeonNoir Saga Edition IS very good.
Though it does have a progressively downward death-spiral mechanic for damage which is unfortunate, because it mirrors taking damage in real life, but it makes taking any damage slow play and feel shitty.
