I did this last session.
It was just kobolds. But when the torchbearer dropped into a pit and the little blighters swarmed the PCs and stabbed the paladin to death in the surprise round, it was a wake-up call for the party!

Should player death be common in Dungeons & Dragons?

No.
At my table, resurrection doesn’t work on animals and pretty much any NPCs. It’s specifically the province of heroes and villains, people who have been touched by destiny and, as a result, death has a slightly slippery grasp on them.

@OGCrimsonJester Hmm… could one do a retroclone which re-expresses 1e AD&D in a clarified tone for the modern gamer looking for something a little more authentic in nature?
OSE: Advanced Fantasy does an excellent job of capturing the vibe… but it’s a B/X retroclone.
