@BishopBarron @MattWalshBlog I dont argue with your interpretation but having read the book and seen the movie I dont think this was the authors intent; to layer in a Christian perspective.

I just saw the much talked about film “Project Hail Mary.” It's very entertaining and uplifting and features a fine performance from Ryan Gosling. But what most intrigued me were the powerful Christian themes at play in it. The title, of course, refers to the Hail Mary pass in football, since the adventure undertaken is a fairly desperate attempt to save the planet. But it also becomes eminently clear that the reference is not just to football but to the Blessed Mother herself, for the Gosling character is undoubtedly a Christ-figure. I don't want to give away too much of the plot, but it involves a willingness to sacrifice one's life utterly in order to deliver the entire human race from disaster. It is, of course, no accident that Gosling's character is called Ryland Grace, for throughout the movie, his presence and actions constitute undeserved favor to others. A particularly intriguing character in the film is a sober German scientist who relentlessly presses Grace to make the supreme sacrifice, even when he is unwilling. She represented for me the great moral demand that presses upon us throughout our lives, continually summoning us to self-gift. A last observation: Jesus had a second in command whom he called Peter (the Rock); Ryland Grace has a very unusual sidekick whom he calls “Rocky.” I'll leave it at that. I know lots of people say that Christianity is in irreversible decline and that we are inhabiting, at least in the West, a post-Christian society. I'm not so sure. Like it or not, we remain a Christ-haunted culture—and a film like “Project Hail Mary” makes this clear.

@BishopBarron All good stories that are satisfying for people echo the greatest story. Believe Tolkien said that?

The book / movie does not have much cussing in it because he is a school teacher so his language is kid friendly like “mother fluffer” and this is rare. Also when it came time to name “Rocky’s” mate was prepared for a possible male name but mate was named “Adrian” and was very relieved! Great book and great movie !

@BishopBarron Project Hail Mary was outstanding and I recommend for the entire family but you gotta read deep into it to catch a religious vibe. Honestly, it was so refreshing to not have any kind of political or ideological garbage pounding you over the head.

@BishopBarron That was my take on it as well. Also, the soundtrack had some songs that sounded very Gregorian.

@BishopBarron But Ryland really isn't a Christ figure and it's silly to think of him as one or to put any Christian themes on this movie (I say this as a Christian). We can simply enjoy it as a nice family friendly film without shoehorning in things like this

@BishopBarron @AMJalsevac But he wasn’t willing to sacrifice his life: he was physically forced against his will. (Just saw the movie tonight.) That part really turned my stomach and instantly decreased my enjoyment of the story.

@BishopBarron I read this post yesterday and only came around this moment to realizing that we all missed the most very obvious Eva Stratt.

@BishopBarron Satan can twist even elements of scripture to his own ends, and so it is with the fetishization of sacrifice in many Christian circles. The movie strikes me as cheerleading science as the savior, and a superior one at that, since his death is not required.

@BishopBarron Could Hollywood still have a chance? We still have a few talented people who didn't go fully nuts over the past decade.

@SGCheah @BishopBarron I wouldn't say that, but I think it fails when creators focus on the message instead of the story. That's why The Lord of the Rings is still awesome. We need timeless stories with the right themes. Not yet another gospel-to-screen translation. We know those.

I've noticed that all the best pro-Christian movies/TV have been written by atheists/agnostics. For example, J. Michael Straczynski, Andy Weir, etc Meanwhile, all the worst cringe, embarrassing pro-Christian work that turns viewers off tends to be written by devout Christians lol
