@streamieapp @trashh_dev In my experience, not using autocomplete is an easier adaptation process than you'd think and it actually improved my productivity.

@trashh_dev You missed the mark. Try coding without autocomplete.

@lillybilly299 Adding little Actionscript snippets in Macromedia Flash was pretty easy. One or two lines to do something simple in an animation timeline. The amateur Flash game explosion was only possible because that program was designed to be super easy for beginners.

Genuine question: how did all of you at 12 (or whenever you first started coding) not get super overwhelmed when your first tried to make something simple on the computer and realized you needed so much background knowledge to even get started?

Didn't participate in Genuary 2024 this year, but I decided to revisit some prompts these days. Here's my take on Prompt 05: In the Style of Vera Molnár. Done in C using SDFs for rendering, with STB libs for PNG saving. #genuary #genuary2024 #genuary5

@LinkofSunshine Considering the original studio was destroyed by the greed of the capital investors, I'd say a bunch of new worker-owned studios is a plus.

@Tantacrul I have no idea if my computer screen is properly calibrated, but the shots with you on camera looked very saturated, and it did make your lips look purple. Probably a color grading thing.

I have renewed respect for creators who face the camera when releasing videos, lol. Mercifully, being told I look half dead is not a new thing for me, so I can handle it! 😀

@Tantacrul More of a mild cringe. It nailed the bland generic nightclub-pop aesthetic.

Those not yet convinced about the power of AI as a force for creative liberation, please: 1. Go to this site: generateandcreate.ai 2. Scroll down and listen to the first 22 seconds of 'Our Song'. Then tell me your reaction:

@SebAaltonen This explains a lot about some low-quality reviews I've received recently. Very wordy and generic, with a faint smell of "delve".

ChatGPT supports uploading PDF files nowadays. You can ask questions from the PDF and make it summarize it, etc. Pretty nice for reading papers quickly.

@Jonathan_Blow Take some days off and do something that doesn't require any amount of thinking. If you're in a position to take a small vacation or visit family/friends, that's usually what works best for me. I wouldn't have survived (this far) in my PhD without some well-timed breaks.

@FreyaHolmer In the context of mathematical groups, the identity element is unique, and by convention additive identities (i.e. identities of commutative groups, esp. if there is a separate multiplication operation) are usually called 0, so I guess no?

I was wondering, are there *any* additive identities that are not 0? I guess the empty set is the additive identity for sets, but maybe it's illegal to call that "additive" since the operator is union, not addition the uh, unitive identity? :3c

it's neat how 0 is kinda nothing and everything at the same time like yeah 0 is that which makes no change when added to something but also, 0 can represent a number, a complex number, a vector, a quaternion, a dual quaternion or a whole ass geometric algebra multivector,,

@astralmatrix This is one of the big reasons I started using Poetry to run all my Python code. Plus it uses a git-friendly lockfile and other NPM-like niceties.

loose conventions of every letter of the alphabet when used in math, in my experience: a - variable, usually the first, or acceleration b - variable, usually the second, or a basis function c - constant, coefficient, or the speed of light, might be a third variable d - infinitesimal/derivative notation, but could also be distance or diameter. using this as a fourth variable after a, b, and c is illegal under international law e - euler's number, or a variable/constant if we're feeling extra brave f - function, probably g - probably also a function. or the scalar gravity constant h - a variable, usually height, but might be a function too i - the imaginary unit, if we're doing complex algebra/analysis, or a basis vector. could also be an integer j - quaternion basis or basis vector k - quaternion basis or basis vector l - mostly unused, bad glyph, nobody likes it, too similar to 1 and | and I. you may use it only if you write it very squiggly cursively or for lagrange polynomials m - a constant, or mass n - an integer, or a normal vector o - mostly unused? if I see this I'm probably reading my own notes p - a constant, usually an intermediate variable q - a quaternion, or an intermediate variable r - a radius, or a position vector s - displacement or arc length t - time or interpolation parameter, usually as an independent variable in a parametric equation, or a tangent vector u - a coordinate in 2D space, or the first parameter of a parametric function with more than one parameter, or a time/interpolation value v - a vector, might be a velocity vector specifically, or scalar speed, or a coordinate in 2D space, or the second parameter of a parametric function w - the real part of a quaternion, or a phase/angular velocity/frequency x - an independent variable or the first component of a coordinate/vector in 2D or 3D space y - a dependent variable or the second component of a coordinate/vector in 2D or 3D space z - a complex number, or the third component of a coordinate/vector in 3D space

@the08games As an art piece it looks very cool, but for a game I'd prefer clearer separation between the ground, buildings, and creatures/the character/etc. Maybe try reducing contrast/color variation within one object, and increase it between different objects.

@rsms I downgraded to a very cheap phone recently and it's very interesting to see which apps struggle and which apps do fine, there is no obvious pattern based on the app's task. It feels like I'm benchmarking the codebase quality more than anything else!
