Can a keto diet "cure" serious mental illness? Here's my piece published today in @sfchronicle. "OPINION: Diagnosed with bipolar disorder, my son began a medically supervised ketogenic regimen — and it sent his symptoms into lasting remission, Jan Ellison Baszucki writes." To read the full oped, just enter your email when prompted for the gift link: tinyurl.com/3kwrcxyu In response to comments from HHS Secretary, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., I share our family's story about how after half a decade of illness, ketogenic therapy has kept my son's bipolar I disorder symptoms in remission since 2021. I include the latest on the emerging science and practice of this therapeutic approach. "Has my son been 'cured'? It’s not a term we use in our work, and it’s also not the most important question. The more pressing concern is whether we are willing to rigorously test promising new treatment approaches when conventional care has failed far too many." @Metabolic_Mind @ChrisPalmerMD @BaszuckiGroup @matthewbaszucki @DavidBaszucki @metcoalition @LWSchizophrenia

🚨Big personal and professional update! We’ve officially closed a $1.5M pre-seed round for Neurovitals — my first co-founded company for which I’m also CSO So—what is #Neurovitals? It’s an audacious attempt to bridge mental health, metabolic health, and AI to build a first-of-its-kind personalized AI support tool that helps people improve their mental health through the lens of metabolic health. Why this matters: Psychiatry remains largely a black box. All psychiatric diagnoses are still clinical—not biomarker-based. But with the advent of AI, we can finally begin to detect patterns in metabolic data that inform mental health in a scalable, individualized way. Neurovitals is more than a support tool. 👉It’s also going to be an engine of discovery. As our user population grows, we’ll uncover new insights into the metabolic–mental health connection. Through collaborations with independent research partners and open data sharing, we aim to help accelerate the emerging field of metabolic psychiatry—a field whose time has clearly come. Deep gratitude to those supporting us—and to the leaders pushing this frontier forward alongside us. With the holidays and end of year approaching, we wanted to share a look back at the work we did in 2025. The field of metabolic psychiatry continues to blossom around the globe! Generating evidence is necessary to impact clinical care. This year, two additional foundational pilot trials were published - a bipolar trial from @EdinburghUni and a trial in college students with depression from @OhioState. Three additional trials completed and will hopefully be published soon - an anorexia nervosa pilot trial, and two randomized controlled trials in bipolar and schizophrenia. As we build upon this foundational evidence for the use of ketogenic therapy in serious mental illness, newly funded work will aim to fill gaps in our current body of knowledge. Research has begun in youth, early psychosis, and low resource communities. As the evidence continues to grow, we endeavor to help build clinical capacity to meet the growing demand by peers and families. In the last year, we took on the task of helping to create continuing medical education that is provided free to healthcare providers. Nearly 6000 healthcare providers participated in these new courses this year, covering topics such as “The Evidence Supporting Ketogenic Therapy for the Treatment of Serious Mental Illness”, “Managing Major Mental Illness with Dietary Change: The New Science of Hope”, and “Cardiovascular Safety of Ketogenic Therapy”. Additionally, we recognized the need to connect clinicians around the world as they begin to learn about metabolic psychiatry. In November, we launched a survey to build a new community of practice for all types of clinicians. In just one month, over 350 people responded with interest, and this community will be a focus of our efforts in 2026 as we begin to realize what the community needs most. We also made four impact investments to build capacity and drive innovation in the field of metabolic psychiatry, including two digital health companies that support metabolic psychiatry, a technology company creating novel enzymes to measure and monitor ketosis, and a neuro-modulation company aiming to restore the brain’s metabolic health. The final pillar of our work in 2025 was the continued growth of partnerships with professional societies and advocacy groups. We are continuing to build relationships with professional organizations in bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and the broader field of psychiatry, attending and speaking at their annual meetings and providing support for their programs and communities. The advocacy community has also begun to express interest in metabolic psychiatry, with new partnerships with @BipolarUK, @BipolarScotland, and the National Alliance on Mental Illness. We are grateful for all of our partners who continue to work towards a world in which metabolic therapies are accepted and available in clinical practice!

How amazing to see the recipient of our first and so far only $1.5 million Baszucki Prize in Science, Dr. Martin Picard @MitoPsychoBio, appear on @hubermanlab. metabolicmind.org/resources/news… Dr. Picard is not only pioneering the field of mitochondrial psychobiology, he has conceived a new model for biomedicine centered on energy as the missing dimension of health. This might just be the most important guest Huberman has ever hosted in the service of transforming how we conceive, study and protect health and vitality for generations to come.

Cleveland Clinic Neurological Institute and Baszucki Group Team Up to Advance Landmark Brain Study with Metabolic Health Markers: The collaboration seeks to study gut-brain connections in neurological disorders. Baszucki Group today announced an expanded commitment to the landmark @ClevelandClinic Brain Study. Launched in 2022, this ambitious longitudinal study plans to follow healthy individuals over a 20-year period with the goal of identifying early disease markers and therapeutic targets needed to prevent and ultimately cure neurological diseases. The commitment from Baszucki Group brings their total donation to the study to $450,000. Baszucki Group’s support has expanded the scope of the Cleveland Clinic Brain Study to include biomarkers from stool samples–a key assessment that could reveal the relationship between the gut and brain and how this connection influences disease risk. This data will help researchers explore how metabolic health relates to brain function, an area of priority for Baszucki Group. “By including these additional assessments, the Brain Study is taking a critical step towards understanding the brain within the context of the whole body,” said @janellison, co-founder and president of Baszucki Group. “This broad, holistic approach to data gathering is key, as it maximizes the possibility of revealing the underlying factors that contribute to neurological dysfunction and uncovering potential treatment options.” Learn more or enroll in the study: cle.clinic/4rHltyF Read the full press release: bwnews.pr/4pvFoiF

For four years, my husband, @DavidBaszucki, and I have dedicated resources to advancing metabolic therapies for mental health, like the kind that helped our son, @BaszuckiMatt, recover from a serious illness. During this time, we worked hard to stay in our lane and remain focused on mental health. I vowed not to dilute our efforts by taking on too much. But sometimes, taking on too much is the only reasonable path. The body and brain are not separate. Americans are facing both a mental and physical health disaster, and we feel compelled to step up to take on this larger challenge. Today, our family is committing $50M to combat America's broader health crisis. The launch of @metcoalition, the Coalition for Metabolic Health, represents our commitment to reversing the chronic disease burden of America's adults and children. We vow, today, to do our part to make the next generation of Americans the healthiest in history, and we believe this goal is within reach. We are honored to bring together experts who have been fighting for decades to bring metabolic health to the mainstream. We are in their debt for their tireless efforts, which we are now dedicating ourselves to supporting and amplifying. Join us in this mission by following CMH on social channels and sharing this announcement. We have nothing if we do not have our health, and we are all in this fight together. @Metabolic_Mind @BaszuckiGroup @bschermd
