@John77394613 @SashSoulsmith @mov_axbx @lukeweston It was a silly thing. The telescope was mounted on top of a concrete block buried into the ground. The gap between the block and the surrounding ground was filled with expanded-polystyrene that degraded with time. (1/2)

@SashSoulsmith @mov_axbx @lukeweston Yess, I have those too, they are extremely useful too. I used the accelerometers some days ago to show a telescope mount wasn't properly damped with respect to the surrounding ground.

@BatchDrake @mov_axbx @lukeweston Spectroid is such an easy to use app. Tangentially related, if you have an Android you can see all the things you can measure with a simple phone with phyphox, from magnetism to the energy loss of a bouncy ball. It's a pretty entertaining afternoon going through all of them.

Our phones calculate where we are by measuring how long it takes a signal from a GPS satellite to reach us -- but the satellites are about ~12,000 miles away, and they transmit with the power of ~50 watts (like a dim lightbulb 😅). Which means that by the time the signal from a satellite reaches Earth, it is incredibly weak (~one millionth of a billionth of a watt, which is like trying to see a 50-watt bulb from 12,000 miles away). Because the signal is so faint, it is terrifyingly easy to drown out, a cheap jammer bought online for $50 can overpower it locally. 👇And TIL that happens, all the time:

@AlainCreaciones El IC del GPS no emite nada. No funciona así el GPS.

1. Me hacen una nota de la comunidad y le reducen la visibilidad al post alegando que el GPS no siempre esta emitiendo. Es falso. El GPS por su propia naturaleza siempre esta emitiendo. Si no lo hace, consume la batería buscando señal.
