@martinswarren @BC_Dorset We had what seemed like a particularly small female Orange-Tip in our garden.

Saw this monster Small Heath yesterday at Ballard Down. At least half as big again than normal. That's a typical sized buttercup it's on! Any else noticing larger than usual specimens this year? @BC_Dorset

@sb264449 Ermine moth caterpillars? I'd guess Spindle Ermine, but not an expert

Can anyone tell me the name of the moth of these caterpillars? They were in a web in a high hedge facing the sun in Dorset. Thanks

Lots of Clouded Yellows at Lizard point today, mostly nectaring busily in weak sunshine. Its been quite a year for them @Cornwall_BC

Large Tortoiseshell flying north as we parked up in our West Bay site a nice way to start a couple of days in Dorset in the Bongo @MigrantMothUK

So excited to find these cinnabar moth caterpillars in the garden. Have loved them since childhood holidays when we used to play with them, making homes on the cliffs for them. I know, we don't do that any more!

Another under-rated butterfly is the Gatekeeper, one of few sp having a good year. Almost every hedgerow has them. I love the double eyes looking out from each eye spot. @savebutterflies

@MadDogRudeMan Do you submit your records? @Bc_dorset would really like this record as we don't have many Purple Hairstreak records for this area.

Highlight today was Purple Hairstreak in Lorton Valley. The first time I've seen this species in Weymouth. Have now seen 34 species of butterfly in Weymouth.

Two years ago today this fresh-out-of-the-pupa Large Tortoisehell butterfly graced the garden. Plenty more spotted in Spring 2021, but only a couple reported on the island this Spring. Have they made it? Will we see more this Summer? @ChrisGPackham @savebutterflies

Expected to see lots of Five-spot Burnet moths Martin Down today, but only three seen over a very large area.Few signs of more to come either.

Excellent afternoon at Compton Down for the @BC_Dorset guided walk. 22 species. So many Small Blues and Adonis.

@mgtr8 Any idea why Martin? My garden is FULL of garlic mustard, but not too many Orange Tip caterpillars.

This year in my garden, I have noticed that Orange Tips have had more success on Dame's Violet, rather than Garlic Mustard

Awesome day out on Fontmell doing the butterfly transect 🦋 16 species of butterfly and a handful of day flying moths. Best of all was seeing a Marsh Fritillary on the route! @DorsetWildlife @BC_Dorset @savebutterflies @SightingDOR
