🇺🇸 Miracles of the American Revolution.
Day 4
DELAWARE CROSSING MIRACLE
Battle of Trenton
December 25-26, 1776
By December 1776 the American Revolution was on the verge of collapse. The Continental Army had been driven out of New York, suffered crushing defeats, and was now down to just a few thousand freezing, hungry, and ill-equipped men. Enlistments were expiring on December 31. Morale was shattered. Many believed the war was lost.
On December 11 the Continental Congress issued a proclamation calling all Americans to a solemn day of fasting, humiliation, and prayer. They begged Almighty God to forgive the nation’s sins and grant deliverance. Washington and the army joined in fervent prayer.
God answered.
On Christmas night General Washington launched a daring surprise attack across the ice-choked Delaware River against the Hessian garrison at Trenton, New Jersey.
The Storm Miracle
A violent nor’easter struck with howling winds, driving snow, sleet, and hail. The conditions were so terrible that crossing the swollen, ice-filled river seemed impossible. Yet the same brutal storm that battered Washington’s men also convinced the Hessians that no attack could possibly come on such a night. The weather provided perfect cover.
Despite the delay, exhaustion, and freezing conditions, Washington’s 2,400 men made it across. They marched nine miles through the snow and ice and struck Trenton at dawn. In just over an hour they won a stunning victory, capturing nearly 1,000 prisoners with very few American losses.
This miracle victory revived the failing Revolution when it was at its darkest hour. It gave the Patriots new hope, encouraged thousands of new recruits to join, and proved the cause of liberty was far from finished.
It was the hand of Almighty God fighting for liberty.
Congress had humbled itself before God. The army had prayed. And the hand of Almighty God moved — sending the very storm that made the impossible possible.
This miracle on the Delaware kept the Revolution alive and showed once again that God was guiding the American cause.
And many more miracles were still to come.
