“That could never happen”… One of my favorite things about history is this: Every so often, archaeology uncovers something that reminds us not to be too quick to say, “That could never have happened.” The Golden Orphism Book is one of those discoveries… I just learned about it, myself. Dating to around 660 BC, it’s an ancient book made from six thin sheets of nearly pure gold, bound together with tiny gold rings. The entire book weighs only 100 grams (about 3.5 ounces) and is preserved today in Bulgaria’s National Historical Museum. This challenges the assumption that ancient civilizations would never create books from metal or that every metal record would have to weigh hundreds of pounds. History has a way of expanding what we once thought was impossible. Be careful about putting limits on what God could inspire, or what ancient people were capable of accomplishing. The more archaeology uncovers, the more I’m reminded that humility is often the wisest response. There are still so many stories buried beneath the earth, waiting to be discovered.
