Before him there was a chipmunk leaning on the rim like he was waiting to be served lol. 🦎 Meet the Western Whiptail Fast, alert, and always on the move, the Western Whiptail is one of the most active lizards found around Frazier Mountain and the Los Padres region. Unlike Western Fence Lizards that often bask in one spot, whiptails spend much of their day searching for insects, spiders, and other small prey. Their long, whip-like tails and striped patterns help them blend into dry grasslands, chaparral, and rocky slopes. If you spot one, don't blink—they're known for their speed and can disappear into the brush in seconds! Fun Fact: Western Whiptails use their flicking tongues to gather scent particles from the environment, helping them locate food and detect potential threats. Every trail has its regulars. 💧 Water Wednesday 💧 Today’s view of Pyramid Lake is more than just a beautiful stop along the Grapevine for me. My uncle helped build the water plant here when I was younger, back when I lived in Gorman, so this place has always felt personal. 🏔️ California’s reservoirs do so much more than provide recreation and scenic views. They store and move water across the state, support wildlife, and play an important role during wildfire season by supplying water for firefighting efforts and surrounding communities. 🌥️ Good Morning from Frazier Mountain 🌲 A cooler and cloudier start to the day across Los Padres National Forest this morning with temperatures sitting around 45° under mostly cloudy skies. Conditions feel crisp outside with a light breeze and fresh mountain air. ☁️ Clouds will hang around through much of the day with only brief breaks of sunshine expected. Afternoon temperatures should stay cool, topping out near 48°. There’s also a slight chance for a few light showers later today, though rainfall totals are expected to remain very light. 💧 Humidity has climbed to 55%, helping reduce some of the recent dry conditions across the mountain.
