Loving the direction of the cameras tonight, @ALERTCalifornia two thumbs up This view from the Gorman 2 camera captured the quiet part after sunset — when the colors soften, the hills fade into layers, and the whole landscape turns blue and purple for a few minutes. cameras.alertcalifornia.org/?pos=34.8263_-… #Gorman #CaliforniaSunset #BlueHour #LosPadres #MountainViews #EveningLight #CaliforniaSkies #CaLandBird #SunsetChaser #CLBLP

That golden brown glow across the hills is incredible. It almost looks sepia-toned, like an old western painting for a few minutes before the light disappeared. And the way the sun is spilling through the saddle in the mountains gives the whole scene this soft smoky warmth. Absolutely beautiful sunset on Tecuya Mountain tonight. One of the best sunsets I’ve ever seen on Tecuya Mountain. That was a good one. Happy Friday 👍 cameras.alertcalifornia.org/?pos=34.8263_-… @ALERTCalifornia @LosPadresNF @NWSHanford #TecuyaMountain #LosPadres #CaliforniaSunset #GoldenHour #MountainLight #SunsetChaser #CaliforniaSkies #CaLandBird #EveningGlow #CLBLP

❄️🌧️ El Niño & Frazier Mountain 🌲 Did you know strong El Niño winters can bring Frazier Mountain a better chance of both rain and snow? During many El Niño years, Pacific storm tracks shift farther south, allowing more storms to reach Southern California and the Los Padres National Forest. That often means wetter weather for the mountains and more opportunities for snowfall at higher elevations like Mount Pinos and surrounding ridges. ❄️ 🌧️ What El Niño can bring to Frazier Mountain: • More winter storms • Increased rainfall • Better snow chances at higher elevations • Greener hillsides and meadows • Strong wildflower blooms in spring 🌼 • Fuller seasonal creeks and healthier forests 💧 🦋 Wet winters can also lead to amazing spring and summer seasons for butterflies, pollinators, and wildlife across the mountain. ⚠️ But there’s another side to it: All that extra grass and brush growth can dry out later in summer and become wildfire fuel during hot, dry conditions. Life in the mountains is all connected — weather, water, wildflowers, wildlife, and wildfire seasons all influence one another here in the Los Padres National Forest. 🌲 #FrazierMountain #LosPadresNationalForest #ElNiño #CaliforniaWeather #MountainWeather #Wildflowers #SnowInCalifornia #CAwx #WildfireAwareness #MountainLife #CLBLP

With all the press that El Niño is getting of late, I thought I’d give a quick-and somewhat simple update on the evolving oceanic and atmospheric conditions and what they mean for Southern California.. *El Niño neutral conditions are currently in place (as of mid-May) across the equatorial eastern Pacific Ocean (near average sea surface temperatures). *Forecast models indicate that there is an 82% chance of El Niño conditions developing by July and an El Niño Watch is in effect (warmer than average sea-surface temperatures). *Models indicate that there is a 96% chance that El Niño conditions will prevail through Northern Hemisphere’s autumn and winter months.. *IMPORTANT: There is still uncertainty on the strength of the evolving El Niño episode (how warm the ocean temperatures will actually become). With that said, there is growing confidence that it could be a strong to very strong (or super) event. *El Niño conditions fuel the atmosphere with heat and moisture enhancing the southern Jet Stream (storm track). *Most El Niños generate stronger Pacific storms for Southern California with above average precipitation, high winds and elevated surf. Los Angeles Rainfall Seasonal Average: 14.25” Past *Super* El Niño Years- 1887-88 21.26” 1982-83 31.25” 1997-98 31.01” 2015-16 9.95” It’s also important to note and as you can see from the rainfall totals above, not all El Niño episodes generate wet years for Southern California, no two El Niños are alike and other atmospheric-oceanic conditions play into how our water year goes.. I will continue to provide updates as conditions evolve…

I hope you are still keeping an eye out for a Goshawk :)

📣 Community Post — Goshawk Watch 🧵 Goshawk Watch – Frazier Mountain / Los Padres NF 🌲 I had a great conversation with someone about American Goshawk and it got me thinking… 👀 There have been historical breeding pairs in the higher elevation forests around Mount Pinos, and this time of year they could be nesting, on eggs, or even feeding chicks depending on conditions. The wild part? 👉 They are incredibly good at staying hidden. 👉 You could be right near one and never know it. So I thought I’d ask the mountain…🌲 Have you seen or heard one? If you have, feel free to share: • General area (no exact locations 🙏) • What you noticed (size, behavior, calls) • Time of year 🪶 What to look (and listen) for: • Large, powerful hawk • Broad wings + long tail • Flies low through trees (fast, quiet, direct) • Sharp, repeated calls echoing through the forest • That feeling like… something is watching you back 👀 ⚠️ Important: These birds are very sensitive during nesting season, so please don’t share nest locations or approach if you think you’ve found one. Observing from a distance is the best way to protect them. Let’s see what the forest knows 🌲🦅 #LosPadresNF #FrazierMountain #MountPinos #BirdingCalifornia #Goshawk #WildlifeWatch #CaLandBird #MountainLife #KeepItWild #ForestFinds 🦅 Fun fact: Most people hear a goshawk before they ever see one. If you’ve heard loud, repeated hawk calls deep in the forest… it might have been one 👀

🦅 Juvenile Cooper’s hawks do have different eye colors than adults, very similar to goshawks and many other accipiters. It’s actually one of the easiest ways to help judge their age. Here’s the progression for Cooper’s hawks: Juveniles: pale yellow to yellow-green eyes 👀 Subadults: deeper yellow/orange Adults: vivid orange to deep red eyes ❤️ Their plumage changes too: Juveniles are brown above with heavy brown streaking on the chest. Adults become blue-gray on the back with fine rusty barring across the chest. Northern goshawks go through a similar change: Juveniles = yellow eyes Adults = striking red eyes That glowing red/orange stare on adult raptors is part of what makes them look so intense and powerful. Once you start noticing eye color, you can often estimate age pretty quickly in the field. 🪶🌲

🦅 Cooper’s Hawk — Los Padres National Forest Cooper’s hawks are fast, agile woodland raptors commonly found throughout the Los Padres National Forest and around Frazier Mountain. These powerful birds are masters of flying through dense trees at high speed while hunting smaller birds and rodents. With long tails, short rounded wings, and piercing orange to red eyes, Cooper’s hawks are built for quick turns and sudden bursts of speed. They often surprise their prey by darting silently through forests, oak woodlands, neighborhoods, and canyon edges. Juveniles have brown streaked chests and yellow eyes, while adults develop striking blue-gray backs with rusty barring across the chest and bright red-orange eyes as they mature. 🪶 Fun Fact: Cooper’s hawks are incredibly strong for their size. Their powerful talons and speed make them one of the most efficient bird hunters in North America. Despite their fierce hunting skills, they are extremely vulnerable to stress and injury during rescue situations. If you hear loud alarm calls from songbirds in the trees, there’s a good chance a Cooper’s hawk is nearby. 🦅🌲 #LosPadres #CoopersHawk #Raptors #BirdsOfPrey #CaliforniaWildlife #WildlifeEducation #NatureFacts #FrazierMountain #BirdWatching #CLBLP #CaLandBird #WildlifeWednesday

🦅 Wildlife rescue isn’t always calm and graceful… sometimes it’s holding a box shut with one hand while trying to safely pull over because a very angry Cooper’s hawk has decided he is absolutely done being transported. 😅 A few years ago I was transporting an injured Cooper’s hawk to rehab when he suddenly went full panic mode in the front seat next to me. Wings beating, talons hitting the box, pure determination to escape. For a moment I honestly didn’t know whether to scream, laugh, or cry. If you’ve ever handled a raptor up close, you know how incredibly strong they are. Every ounce of them is built for survival. Thankfully, we made it safely. He didn’t escape, nobody lost an eye, and after a little while he finally settled down. 🦅🤍 Moments like that remind you that wildlife may trust us for a moment during rescue… but they never stop being wild. And honestly, that’s part of what makes them so incredible. #WildlifeRescue #CoopersHawk #RaptorRescue #CaliforniaWildlife #LosPadres #NatureStories #MountainLife #WildBirds #WildlifeRehab #CLBLP #CaLandBird #FlashbackFriday

☀️ WEEKEND WEATHER OUTLOOK — FRAZIER MOUNTAIN 🌲 A warm and very dry weekend is settling in across Frazier Mountain and the Los Padres National Forest. Sunshine will dominate the forecast with temperatures climbing into the mid to upper 70s by early next week. Overnight temperatures will still cool down nicely, but afternoons will feel much warmer under the sun. 💨 Dry air and breezy afternoon winds will continue to increase fire danger across the mountain. Vegetation is drying quickly and even small sparks can become serious problems this time of year. ⚠️ PLEASE USE EXTRA CAUTION THIS WEEKEND • Avoid parking in dry grass • Secure trailer chains • Be careful with equipment and tools • Skip outdoor burning • Keep water nearby while working outdoors • Report smoke immediately It’s going to be a beautiful weekend in the mountains — enjoy it safely and stay weather aware. 🌲☀️ #FrazierMountain #LosPadresNationalForest #MountainWeather #WeekendWeather #CaliforniaWeather #CAwx #WildfireAwareness #FireWeather #DryConditions #StayWeatherAware #MountainLife #CLBLP
