my revised version of Newcomb's problem: you're in a line of people waiting to talk to the AI. the game is simple. there are two boxes. one of them is transparent and contains $1,000. the other is opaque and may or may not contain $100,000. you can choose to take just the opaque box or both boxes (one-boxing vs two-boxing). in between each new person, the AI is hidden and given a bunch of your data scraped from your online habits. based on this, the AI attempts to guess if you're going to one-box or two-box. if it thinks you're likely to one-box, it puts the money in the opaque box. if it thinks you're likely to two-box, it leaves the opaque box empty. since you're in line waiting, you can see everyone else's results. what you see is that the AI is usually right, but it gets it wrong every once in a while. sometimes someone manages to successfully two-box. sometimes people one-box and it's empty. but the AI seems to be correct about 90% of the time. most people who one-box come out ahead of people who two-box. now it's your turn. what do you do?

you ask yourself: is this person lying, or telling the truth? but there’s a third option: people who (cringe term alert) gaslight themselves. some people gaslight themselves into thinking something is true, then when they tell it to you, they’re not “lying”. this changed my game.

@unvarnishedvoid @CainzJawbone @BlueRepublik I went red and assumed all rational actors, but rational doesn't mean people won't pick blue for a variety of reasons. Red is just guaranteed survival for oneself, so its the most likely option for those maximizing that. I also don't know if the question counts as game theory.

@CainzJawbone @BlueRepublik no someone literally told me that its game theory and everyone involved is assumed to be rational. also i kinda think anyone arguing that you will get 100% red thinks everyone involved is rational

@Pirat_Nation Welp people better start using that second amendment before we lose all rights. We need another hero. These people need to realize they work for us. NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND.

Starting September 2026, a silent update pushed by Google, will block every Android app whose developer hasn't registered with Google, signed their contract, paid up, and handed over government ID. Google calls the new rule Android Developer Verification. This starts with Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand expanding worldwide in 2027 every app on certified Android phones must come from a developer who has registered their real identity with Google. This covers apps from the Play Store, third-party stores, and sideloaded APKs. Here’s what developers have to do: They sign up in Google’s new verification system, share their legal name, address, phone number, and ID, and pay a one-time $25 fee. Apps from unverified developers will be blocked or come with big warnings and extra steps. Google doing this to fight malware, the company says sideloaded apps are about 50 times more likely to contain bad software than Play Store apps. Android is becoming a little more controlled with all of this changes

@ninjagoflame Do we have proof these are scalpers vs dedicated fans? I'm genuinely trying to understand why everyone is assuming scalpers when these wave has two of the most desirable minifigures to fans since the Wolfpack Beastmaster.

@aUSUualsuspect @AniseNot Actually, I just realized the word "everyone" includes people that are alive and physically incapable of pushing a button, therefore crisis averted as they are literally unable to engage anyway. The described outcomes are only if everyone engages.

@CuntyQue @AniseNot We disagree on whether an implicit assumption for inclusion in scenarios without specificity overrides explicit inclusion criteria in a scenario with specificity. Particularly when the explicitly stated inclusion materially affects the optimal outcome.

Ok but this test is announced suddenly. Everyone on Earth must take it immediately, including all children from 3yrs old on up You are not with your children & cannot speak to them before the test is administered Now what do you pick?
Tim Urban@waitbutwhy

Everyone in the world has to take a private vote by pressing a red or blue button. If more than 50% of people press the blue button, everyone survives. If less than 50% of people press the blue button, only people who pressed the red button survive. Which button would you press?

We did the red/blue voting thing and everyone else voted and now it's your turn. The vote tallies are suddenly revealed to you and the vote is exactly 50/50. If you vote blue everyone lives, if you vote red all the people who voted blue die. How do you vote?

@CuntyQue @AniseNot That is literally the exact relevant part 🤣 Your position comes down to essentially “I’m choosing to disregard what this scenario says explicitly because of other scenarios I’ve seen which imply something else.”

@aUSUualsuspect @AniseNot ...even if you believe "everyone in the world" assumes this to be the case that isn't an implicit assumption. I'm open to being told of hypotheticals where you aren't meant to assume rational actors (unless the assumption is the entire point), but again, I am not familiar with it

@aUSUualsuspect @AniseNot ..., I believe hypotheticals are attempting to tease out a certain abstraction, and as mentioned, generally involve rational actors. If actors incapable of rationality are involved, I believe that fact should be spelled out explicitly. It's definitionally true that...

@CuntyQue @AniseNot Do you engage in a lot of hypotheticals? Do you think “everyone in the world does” too? The fact that it’s everyone should factor into your thinking. If it doesn’t that’s a logical failing on your part.

Everyone responding to this poll chooses whether they want to pick up a red gun or do nothing. if u do nothing, u get a blue tshirt. - if > 50% of ppl wear blue, nothing happens - if not, all reds must fire on the blues. u must personally pull the trigger Which do you choose?

@CuntyQue @AniseNot No. If a hypothetical wants to exclude a huge percent of the population, it shouldn’t say “everyone in the world.” Say “all healthy adults.” It’s even less characters than “everyone in the world.”
