The NASA M2M office is on it! Their model run shows the western edge of this storm may compress the SIR ahead of it, thanks to the fast wind from the coronal hole. So although the blast wave did get damped at its western flank, it looks like compression of the coming SIR might make up for the loss. This means aurora photographers, get ready for some action March 31!

@TamithaSkov Im hearing mid to late Monday due to how fast it’s moving. Confused as to when.

The X1.95-flare today is super interesting, not just because we expect a strong storm to impact Earth sometime starting mid-to late January 20. But also because the event launched a big "parent" and little "baby" CMEs at Earth! Look at all the sets of post-eruptive arcades-- those are separate storms!

This is very wild! The patch is so small and distinct from the rest of the #aurora indicating a highly localized process. The "white" color of the light may actually reflect a broader spectrum of color than typical aurora emits. Perhaps a very bright FALE (Faint Aurora Like Emission) that might suggest a scattering of a discrete energetic particle population into the loss cone by wave processes. I'd love to hear what magnetospheric and ionospheric scientists think of this particular anomaly. Excellent capture!

HERE WE GO! A "Severe" G4 geomagnetic storm is in the forecast Thursday night. This is quite the rare event and has at least a shot at reaching G5 levels. These events are like snowflakes, no two are the same. With that in mind, the below map is a loose representation of what G4 storms are capable of from a viewing perspective. More to come!

@not0nlin3 @EricSnitilWx Most of the “severe” part will happen during the day according to sources that monitor solar storms for a living. It arrives Thursday morning assuming nothing changes. I’d be surprised if the G4 status lasts until Thursday night into Friday.
