My point was more that United should probably be prioritising a different position right now. A year ago I would have really liked Zubimendi. I also viewed Ugarte’s arrival positively at the time as a potential replacement for Casemiro — but it seems we may have to address that position again this summer. If Ugarte does establish himself in that role, then I’d definitely be in favour of signing Tonali.

I’m a big fan of Sandro Tonali, but I don’t think that’s the position United should prioritise right now. With Casemiro leaving, the squad needs a proper DM first. And €100m would simply be too much.

I ran a similar metric using event data. The holding time here is estimated from goalkeeper collection (claim/pick-up) to the next pass, so the methodology differs slightly — but the correlation with the @TheAthletic graphics is very strong. Looking at the totals, I estimate that around 35–40% of goalkeeper possessions last longer than 6 seconds — and in the extreme case of Senne Lammens it reaches as high as 65%!!! Which raises an obvious question: Should the 6-second rule actually be enforced again?

I waited for the first five games under Carrick to use this chart — and it was worth it. • A small attacking improvement is visible, even with fixtures against City and Arsenal in the mix. • Chelsea look like the real rival for 4th. Their form is strong and, unlike us, trending with fewer internal contradictions. • Another drop for Tottenham. The curve keeps bending the wrong way, and at this point it’s not noise
