For those unfamilar with the Eurozone: one of its most interesting aspects is the fact that each member state mints its own coins with its own designs on one side, but they can be used and thus circulate across the entire region. So sometimes you check your pocket and find this famous Da Vinci design from Italy, the Irish harp, Athena's owl that was also depicted on Ancient Greek coins more than two millenia ago or, very often, the German eagle. Now that Bulgaria adopted the common currency, it is only a matter of time before every citizen of the zone will have possessed a Bulgarian coin at some point.

Tomorrow Bulgaria joins the euro area. For 25 years we have outsourced decisions on monetary policy to Frankfurt by pegging the Bulgarian Lev to the euro. Now we join the decision-making of the world second most important currency. Lets make the best of it. 🇧🇬🇪🇺

Did you know? As a result of Bulgaria’s accession to the EU, all new 💶 euro banknote designs since 2013 feature the word “euro” in the Latin (EURO), Greek (EYPΩ), and Cyrillic (EBPO) alphabets.
Bulgaria 🇧🇬 will adopt the euro on 1 January 2026.

In 2026, the ECB will choose a new design for Euro banknotes.
The plan is to move away from the abstract, imagined bridges, arches and towards depicting great figures from European history like da Vinci or Marie Skłodowska-Curie.
The EU is becoming more culturally conscious.
