The under-analyzed third space in America is the waiting/eating areas outside of grocery stores. All grocery stores have them, a sort of aimless series of tables or chairs screwed into the concrete outside the store, from Erewhon all the way down to discount grocery, and if you pay attention you'll notice that these areas are always full of people just hanging around. For example the Mexican discount grocery will have a sleeping cowboy, while the Erewhon will have a black man reading a book in a purple suit. These people stay there for extremely long periods of time and seem to buy nothing from the actual store. Grocery stores emit a strange warmth that weirdos are attracted to

@ColtranesHorn The best bar in LA history was the random bar in the downtown LA Ralph's a few blocks from skid row. I once saw a guy eat an entire raw fish scales and all while watching fight club and drinking $3 Chardonnay. Incredible.
