The 1953 coup (Operation Ajax/TPAJAX by CIA, Boot by MI6) used an intensive, improvised psyops campaign to destabilize PM Mosaddegh and build support for his overthrow. CIA/MI6 assets ran propaganda via newspapers, radio, leaflets, cartoons, and agents: portraying Mosaddegh as anti-Islamic, a Tudeh (communist) puppet, weak, and a threat to oil stability and Iranian sovereignty. They staged false-flag attacks (e.g., bombing a mullah’s house blamed on communists or Mosaddegh), hired thugs and mobs for pro-Shah riots, paid demonstrators, bribed politicians/clergy/officers, and spread rumors of collapse. Declassified CIA histories confirm this created chaos that “justified” installing Gen. Zahedi and restoring the Shah, protecting Western oil access amid Cold War fears. It succeeded on Aug. 19 after an initial failure.
