“Horace Mann went to his grave having never once uttered the phrase college- and career-ready. We’ve become more accustomed to thinking about the private ends of education. We’ve completely lost the habit of thinking about education as citizen-making.” theatlantic.com/magazine/archi…

@VelstandGlenn @reviewjournal Lastly, if we "compare" p/pupil $ to Nat'l avg, we must compare apples 2 apples & not new p/pupil number that includes $'s that CAN'T actually go to every pupil. We are more than $3,500 less than the Nat'l Avg & ranked 48th in School Finance by @educationweek. @SteveSebelius

@VelstandGlenn @reviewjournal And even if all marijuana taxes supplemented ed funding (they didn't) it's a drop in the bucket of total need. As Guinn Center noted, education funding hasn't even kept up w/ cost increases (which is why we see cuts in district budgets yr after yr). bit.ly/33grVQR

@VelstandGlenn @reviewjournal As new revenue went to ed budget, NV general fund contributed less. It's $ into a bucket w/ gaping hole at the bottom. Fact: Base p/pupil funding actually decreased after the "historic" commerce tax, $1.6 billion in IP1 room tax revenue has been diverted supplementing ed budget

@VelstandGlenn @reviewjournal For the sake of accuracy, when discussing ed funding we must ensure we have all the details and look at the entire picture. Yes, new revenue sources (mj, room tax, & commerce taxes) technically went to K-12, but did NOT necessarily increase funding to schools.

@vix_kreidel @FundNvEd @GovSisolak It is our understanding that (in NV) they are eliminated due to budget deficits. Is there information you have regarding testing?

We talk a lot about ballooning class size, teacher vacancies, absenteeism, safety... let’s also remember the true joy & inspiration students find in an art or music classroom. NV doesn’t fund adequately enough for this 2B reality. ⏰4change. ⁦@FundNvEd⁩ ⁦@GovSisolak

AND continued the ongoing law-defying nonsense re: hotel tax $ collected via IP1, approved by voters in '09 to raise $ for schools. Since '11, IP1 revenues have been sent to edu BUT the state has reduced general fund contributions by an equivalent amount, netting ZERO for edu.

Kenny Guinn Center for Policy Priorities
Here is our analysis referenced by @FundNvEd Policy Director @MichaelaTonking. Over period FY 2010-2019, General Fund contribution to DSA decreased from 88.3% to 74.5%; Revenues from other sources (e.g., IP 1, etc.) increased from 11.7% to 25.5%. #Supplanting
Kenny Guinn Center for Policy Priorities@GuinnCenter

Background: IP1 provided room tax revenue from State Supplemental School Support Account to GF as State funding source to be distributed to school districts via DSA. Source of funds is 3% tax on rental transient lodging. We examine #DSA revenues over time.

In public comment, @eduNVnow & @HOPEforNevada decrying today's vote to continue allowing ~$400M IP1 room tax to support education, but then decreasing general fund support for education by an equivalent amount (known as "supplanting"). This has been happening since the recession
