My honest answer is that I don’t know. Is there anything in the Bible that speaks of this or is it just “Catholic tradition?” In one way it would make sense from the standpoint of Jesus being born completely sinless because we know that all humans are born sinful but then also Jesus is God and therefore, of course is already sinless…biblically would suggest Mary was not sinless as scripture clearly defines ALL humans have sinned. With respect to her perpetual virginity, that goes to the greater question of whether she had other children which biblically it does suggest but the Catholic Church references that “brother and sister” was used to describe cousins and first relatives rather than actual siblings. On the other hard, biblically, there would be nothing wrong if Joseph and Mary had other children as that is literally the purpose of Marriage which is its own God breathed sacrament. I personally find it hard to believe that Joseph would find it proper to have sexual relations with the mother of Almighty God! As for the Assumption, I don’t see anything that speaks of this biblically. The only two for sure are Enoch, and Elijah along our Lord of course…there are apocryphal texts referencing this (I believe) from the 4th or 5th century so it is curious why there is no earlier reference to it…you would think that would be a major event in scripture before 400 AD. I love the question and would love all answers. Without question, I love the blessed mother and hold her in high reverence, and I’m a non denominational Christian…
